The Station Agent (2003) Not at all what I was expecting!
I watched it earlier this year, and it wasn't what I was expecting either. Not exactly the "feel good" movie of the year, but I thought the performances from the entire cast were spot-on, and it was nice to see a character-driven movie for a change instead of the action/shoot 'em up/CGI fest movies that have become so dominant in recent years.

The Haunting is a masterpiece. The original 1963 version directed by Robert Wise. The less said about the godawful remake, the better.

Creepy housekeeper Mrs. Dudley: "No one will come any closer than town... In the night, in the dark. No one lives any closer than town. No one will hear you if you scream... In the night, in the dark."

Halloweentown (1998). I will never understand why this is a cult classic among my generation. Nothing more than a pile of cheesy dialogue, over acting and cheap costume effects.

These two back to back
Rififi......Classic French film noir. Seems like a lot of more modern crime drama's used a lot of the ideas from this film.(Watched in French with subtitles :) )
Li Notti di Cabiria (Nights of Cabiria) Italian film about a prostitute ,made into the musical Sweet Charity

I wonder why I love these films so much more than British or American offerings of today?

Two of my dearest friends are bringing Halloweentown for my wife and I to watch this weekend. I've never seen it before, though I must admit to enjoying Hocus Pocus. It's a yearly watch for us! My wife and I have been working our way through some great, and some terrible horror (Terror Train). Our last film was Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, a real classic, and a favorite of mine since I was maybe 8 years old.

"The Accountant" - Saw this at a Matinee at the local megaplex. Can't beat that $7.00 price tag. Far better than I expected. A few twists, the biggest one I saw coming a mile away, a few turns. Good action and great acting overall. I don't know how it did at the B.O. but I see a string of Bourne-like sequels in the offing. If you're looking for a better than average action picture with some good dialogue and some brains behind it... this is for you.

The FBI Story (1959). Unnecessarily long, it's really the "Chip Hardesty" (James Stewart) story, and a good bit of recorded history got re-written so they could tell the story they wanted to tell; I'm surprised J. Edgar Hoover didn't get a writing credit. Still, it's entertaining enough, and worth watching if for nothing more than the wardrobes and hats.

In the "What Movie are you Going to See" category, yesterday I bought tickets for TCM's sponsoring of "Breakfast At Tiffany's" which will be shown in a theater in NYC on 11/27 and 11/30. I am really excited to see this one on the big screen. I believe it is also being shown in other cities, so just check on line (Google Fandango and Breakfast at Tiffany's and you should get there).

Two years ago I bought a double-feature blu-ray of Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow and Dark Shadows. I watched Sleepy Hollow back then, but only just now got to Dark Shadows. I'd recalled it didn't get great reviews, but I thought it was a howl!

And I'd no idea that Eva Green was in it, along with Helena Bonham-Carter and Michelle Pfeiffer!

I think Dark Shadows is an underrated Burton film, I like it a lot. But then, I was one of those folks who rushed home from school everyday to watch DS in the sixties, so I'm already a fan, and I can appreciate all the ways in which Burton shows his love for the original even while taking a very different tack in the film. To folks who aren't familiar with the original "spook opera", I know this film seems a misfire. My daughter is a big Burton fan, and she didn't dig it.

Hey, don't forget Bella Heathcote and Chloe Grace Moretz - this film is loaded with great actresses... though Eva Green's outrageously unhinged portrayal of Angelique (*) is the standout.

(* Full disclosure: Yeah, I had a huge teen crush on Lara Parker's Angelique in the original series!)

I wasn't a Dark Shadows fan as a kid, but I found this film absolutely hilarious. I loved it and wished they'd made at least one sequel. Depp was/is hilarious as a "Vamp out of time". His interactions with '70's culture had me howling.
