Aero Oil Pull Specifications

Greetings Loungers,

Does anyone know the thickness/weight of Aero's oil pull horsehide and if it is veg tanned?

Better yet, does anyone know which UK tannery it comes from? I understand that this is something Aero might not want to disclose, which is fine of course, but I figured there's no harm in asking.

I know I should ask Aero directly, but it's the weekend, I'm bored and I don't have that kind of patience.

Cheers

By the sample I have, I would guess about 2.5 oz thickness, which i think is something like 1.1 mm. Samples are hard to judge by as they represent such a small part of the whole hide. Definitely in Aero's medium weight category.

Aero used to have a heavier, thicker oil pull which I thought was the greatest leather they ever offered. It was heavier than the FQHH in weight, just as thick, I believe, but very pliable, not at all stiff. It had a depth of color that was mesmerizing. Hope they bring it back!

If I were you I would simply pose your question(s) to Aero and then patiently await their answer(s). ;)

I think I´ve seen photos of their old heavy oil pull and it did look pretty amazing. That was made by Horween I think, so maybe they stopped making it, which would be a shame.

@Fanch I can't argue with that, but like I said, just thought I'd ask in case anyone already knows.

If he does that then the public misses out on information they might find useful when they do a Google search for Aero oil pull horsehide.
Not if @Furrowson reports back on the Lounge what Aero tells him. ;) Personally I am curious myself the nature of oil pull HH Aero is currently using.

@Harris HTM Don't worry mate, I'll be sure to report my findings. I look forward to seeing your ideas come to fruition. They have some nice oil pull jackets at Kentaurus by the way. I wish I'd paid more attention to them while I was there, but I wasn't interested in it at the time. I did have a quick feel of one and it was thick but soft. Definitely appealing.

From what I've gathered on this kind of hide in general (i.e. full aniline; no top dye), it is usually considered to be of the highest quality as the absence of a (pigmented) top coat means there's no hiding any imperfections and the goal really is to let the leather speak for itself. It's also very resilient as abrasions/wear can be rubbed out easily and it's heavily stuffed with oils/waxes. Any severe abrasion on leather with a dark top coat over a lighter base will show badly. It seems that it is usually veg-tanned, but Aero don't state that it is, hence my question. Apparently it breaths very well for its thickness and can also be more susceptible to liquids (stains) because it's relatively porous.

There are products for oil pull leather that will redistribute the oil on the surface and renew the hide to a certain extent. I don't think this is the same as regular leather conditioner.
I am not recommending this to anyone as I have no experience with it. Just thought it was interesting.

If Aero tells me anything interesting I'll let you know.

Cheers

I don't know about the particular oil pull they use, but oil pull in general tend to show age, wear, and scratches much earlier than regular pigmented leather, while minor scratch might be rubbed back to be less visible but on finished/ pigmented leather the same element won't even leave any scratches at all, I believe if you like resilient ever pristine looking this is not the kind of leather you would like.

@navetsea I would say that a leather showing age is not the same as leather being damaged. When I say resilient I don't mean that it stays looking pristine, rather that the leather is resistant to undesirable, irreversible changes to the aesthetic or integrity of the material.

You're right that it shows age quickly, but in a way that is desirable (to some) and that doesn't constitute damage to the leather. If the 'vintage look' isn't for you then obviously it is a bad choice. Also, I don't mean that it is Aero's toughest hide or something, because it obviously isn't. However, Holly did mention in a thread that they've never seen a worn out oil pull jacket, so I think it's pretty tough stuff nonetheless.

..."none of us at Aero have ever seen either leather 'worn out' so the durability of either is probably only relevant when considering an Aero as an heirloom to pass down through the generations rather than a jacket that might wear our during it's first owner's lifetime!"

Like I've said, this is my subjective opinion based on pretty much no experience with the leather at all. When I do learn more about Aero's oil pull leather I'll share it here.

The current oil pull in use at Aero doesn't seem to scuff much. It seems to be dyed through more than most leathers and perhaps that is why. Now the Shackleton leather scuffs easily and noticeably but that is battered steer.

Good to know. How porous did it seem to you compared to the other samples? Did water tend to soak into it leaving a dark patch, or run off?

It is less water resistant than CXL for certain. The leather absorbs the water. I have had jackets of unprotected leather before and got them soaked through 10 or more times with no bad results. The oils in the leather protect it. Just let it dry narturally. But no, it isn't very waterprooof from I have seen. No staining though.
