Last couple of nights we've been watching the nerw Netfloix version of Lemoney Snickett. I've never read the books nor have I seen the Jim Carey film (which I assume bombed, hence the lack of sequels?), but I'm loving this series. It's like Tim Burton at his best channelling Roald Dahl. Cynical, downbeat, relentlessly gonig against the Hollywood fetishisation of the "Happy ending" - I love it. It's life-affirming.
Here's hoping. It's such a shame they didn't kill the show at the end of the second series and let it all go out on a high. Yes, series 4, while weak, has still been better than the abysmal third series and the diabolically awful 'andc it was all a dream!' "special", but really, it's far beneath a talented writer like Gatiss. I can only assume he's been dragged down by the exhausted 'skills' of Moffat. Hopefully Gatiss will be free now to do something good - and nobody will want to work with Moffat, as he's now ruined two big succesful shows.
The stupidist thing about the fourth season is that it's so far up it's own backside, it has wholly substituted carnival mind reading tricks and fancy graphics for anything approaching actual detective work. Bit of a screw-up when you're dealing with the most famous detective in literary fiction....

I've only ever see nthe first couple of episodes - I must watch it properly now it's on Netflix. The thing I liked most about it was that it managed to be a show set in Belfast which neither attempted to pretend the tedious local political situation didn't exist, nor made that the sole be all, end all of all the characters' lives.

I had a mini-marathon of Sherlock yesterday. We were stuck at home due to an ice storm, so I figured, why not?Watched all of season two.
Ah, back when it was worth watching....

I was disappointed with the 4th season. I enjoyed it, yes, but the first two seasons are SO much better. Season 4 felt...pretentious, as if they were tasked with delivering the Best.Season.Ever and went completely overboard. A shame.

The other thing that is interesting, having started series three, is that it is one story arc - oft times a series will deal with one criminal in a series, then open up with another.
It is still about the one criminal (no spoilers I promise), though I suspect it will wrap up by the end. I understand they are planning more, but nothing firm yet.
We also really enjoy the Jack Taylor series of tv films with Iain Glenn. Set in Galway, partially filmed there, partially in Bremen Germany, I gather for EU funding purposes. Netflix, of course, so we're waiting for the more recent ones to become available (same with Ripper Street, etc., etc.!).

This week, I'm gonna be watching the Barrett-Jackson auto auction any chance I get.
The Curse Of Oak Island. Can't say I really watched it, I recorded it and fast forward through almost all of it. I just wish, they could get it over with! I have a feeling, that the island has been so disturbed over the last few hundred years, that we will never really know why the original shaft was dug!

Leah Remini Scientology. Reddit Q/A pt2. This is good and very funny stuff. Fake Naval records signed by a ranking officer who never existed, fonts that hadn't been used yet, pink eye exaggerated as blindness, a home for LRH to return to with crop circles in the shape of the interlocking Kool logo circles surrounding the house (because he was so in-love with his Kool cigarettes). At least three homes fully stocked with all the things he loved so he has a comfortable place to stay when he returns. A certain type of shower sandal. Favorite books on the nightstands. Say what you will about cults, but the kind of things you couldn't make up.
Taboo. episode 2. The sequencing is a little strange and/or unnecessary for cheap dramatic affect. Small details that are then referenced a couple minutes later. The audio was even worse in this episode. I had to check closed-captioning at least three times. A lot of these period pieces fail to hint at how awful these people must have smelled. This show covers that. Clothes stained from body oils. Everything looks like it reeks. The city looks like a cesspool of disease and crud...except the immaculate East Indian Company offices. This show is also pushing the FCC limits. A couple of "****" and "fucking" without a bleeping out. I noticed people saying "asshole" on another station last week. They were still censoring this language a couple months ago. More of the story and characters solidified, but I'm wary of the payout being anticlimactic. I hope this isn't another series with an overly complicated writing scheme with nothing on the back end.

Lucifer is fun and interesting. You can "catch up" on HULU. Definitely NOT for ultra-religious Christians of ANY stripe as it bears little resemblance to any "approved" doctrine. The lead is charming as are his sidekicks. Great popcorn for the brain.

The audio is killing me. Either there's no closed captioning up here or I couldn't figure out how to turn it on...either way, trying to decipher what they're saying is brutal. I find the narrative, at least what I can grasp, is moving along at a fairly sluggish pace. I'm hoping I'll warm up to the show in episode three next week...maybe my Georgian London accent and mumbling decoder will be working by then.

Sherlock, The Final Problem. Agreed with some posters on reddit that there were some plot holes that detracted from the overall story. The video of Mary Watson seemed like the elegy for the series.
