A Review - U.S. Authentic G-1

U.S. Authentic G-1. For reference, I am 5' 11", and 175 lbs. Soon to be 170 lbs. Jacket size 40R.

Having this jacket for a number of days now, I like it more each time I put it on. No, it is not perfect, but real close. The shoulder could be an inch narrower. Other than that, it is what was hoped for.

The leather has an aroma, but unlike the Cockpit USA leather aroma. Not bad, just a bit different. The skin is just like all of my goat skin jackets, very supple and soft.

The lining is 100% rayon, making jacket ingress/egress as smooth as silk, nearly effortless. I know some here will not like this feature.

When the G-1 first arrived, the collar wanted to stand up for some reason. So it has spent time on a quality hanger fully zipped up. Now the collar has relaxed and lies the way it is supposed to.

Looking over the stitching closely, I did find one micro-short thread that was out of place. No big deal as it does not impact anything and it is invisible to anyone but me (inside the pocket).

The knit cuffs are a bit longer than on any of my other jackets...A-2's, G-1's, B-15, CWU-36, 45, 55, MA-1. You can see it in the photos. The material used is a blend, and should be very resistant to fraying and/or pilling. I have noticed that my wool knits tend to pill very quickly.

I like U.S. Authentic well enough that if I were to have a custom jacket (A-2, G-1) made, they would get the job. The price is expensive, but not unreasonable. As already stated, this G-1 was ordered as a "fit" jacket, with the intent of having them do a custom jacket for me. But it fits well enough that I could not justify spending extra $$$ on a custom job. I am normally an "off the rack" size 41R. But as we all know, sizing on G-1's and A-2's is all over the place!

Overall, a "Two Thumbs Up" rating.

Yes, the Mustang as the backdrop would be nice. It should be in the paint shop mid July. We will also be working with a company called My Bombshells. They will do a promotional video and photo shoot with us, and using one or two of their Bombshell Models.

Reminds me of my favorite, almost certainly untrue, flying story...

A student and his instructor were flying in the alert area in Pensacola. Alert areas are multi-use so everyone uses a common frequency, like CTAF but area specific.

This particular student was flying a maneuver which called for 10 inches of manifold pressure. The student was doing a poor job of it.

The instructor, who was a screamer, yelled "10 inches, dammit! I said TEN INCHES!" to the student, accidentally keying the mic switch down to UHF rather than up, for ICS. As such, he inadvertently broadcasted his rant to everybody in the area.

Another instructor pilot, trying to help out the one screaming over the radio, keyed his mic and informed him,

"Hey, ten inches, you're broadcasting!"

Followed almost immediately by another instructor responding,

"Hell, if I had ten inches, I'd be broadcasting too!"


Hopefully not too off color for a public forum. :)

Another tall tale, likely true, while I was going through the flight syllabus as a student flight surgeon while I was in Penascola. A hotshot student pilot (not me) on a solo flight broadcast "Graham Tower, this is Graham Cracker - eat me, eat me, eat me!" To which the tower responded "Graham Cracker this is Graham Tower. You're the only plane in the sky. Consider yourself eaten!" :eek: Nice reception party waiting for the student pilot after he landed. :D

Hehe, I don't doubt it. The length of that thing must have made tailstrikes a definite possibility.

In my case at least, the plane is supposed to be landed on the tail! :D

Tailstrikes? I know of a former VP for a major airline (she has resigned - retired) that drug the tail on a B-757-300.

To get back on topic (yes, please), here is a side by side photo of the U.S. Wings (44R) & U.S. Authentic (40R) G-1's. Both on the same hanger, hanging at the same relative height:

In the above photo you can see the shoulders at 18" on the Wings, 20.75" on the US Authentic. Note the sleeves, how looooong they are on the Wings. A regular member here commented that the US Wings looks like a 42 Long, not a 44R. The US Authentic sleeve is 25", US Wings is 27".

Hey Peter, can I ask how you know that is a US Wings?

If it is, it would have answered about a dozen threads on the subject. I see the curved pocket flaps and no seam on the bottom tabs, so two things that narrow the field considerably!
