G-1 collar replacement advice needed.

Hi guys,

I need to replace the collar of my 70's Imperial Leathers G-1, the jacket is in good condition and the fit is great but it has one of those dynal type collars that isn't looking that nice anymore. I live in Australia and there's nothing locally to get a replacement, at least that I have found.

I have a local taylor that has done some good repairs on my leather jackets and she'll replace it easily, I just need the mouton collar. Preferably in rust or mid brown.

Any of you know where could I search for one? Do any of the usual makers (Aero, etc) sell this?

Oz is renowned for its sheep farming - I'm surprised you can't get hold of a cured lamb skin locally - a rug or a mouton coat? I'm fairly sure the dark mouton is dyed that colour from a natural hide? The problem with vintage mouton is it can be dried out, have museum bug, mould etc. You'd be better getting hold of new stuff if possible.

I'm looking for new stuff, not bothered about an exact replica, I just want a nicer collar that's all.
I can get whole sheepskins here easily but the price would make it ridiculous to use it just for a collar. Noone sells small pieces of the material that I can find.

In the UK, charity/thrift shops are a cheap source of pretty much anything including Mouton, fur, leather pieces, period zippers buttons -attached to cheap garments good hunting and I'll keep a lookout for suitable mouton over here - if I find any Ill post it over for you -free unless it's a an illegal import? I know Australia has strict rules regarding organic materials.

Surely you can find some real fleece material on an old coat or jacket...
Tailors can change it fery fast and easily for you...

I'd say, as others have noted, the cheapest option is probably to find a cheap, charity shop fur of some sort that you like, and use that as a donor. Also worth scouring eBay and Etsy for people selling mouton pieces to be used for trim (the fur trim look is apparently back this year) - for instac,e this popped up on a quick search: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/252...ga_search_query=mouton piece&ref=sr_gallery_1 Not the colour you're after, but you might ask and see what they have...

I'd not hold out a lot of hope approaching an established maker to sell you a bit - I should have thought most of them only buy in what they can use themselves, and aren't like to sell on raw materials.

That's so kind of you to offer!! This forum has amazing members, it is a special place.
Australia is a bit funny with certain products due to quarantine restrictions, fortunately leather is fine.
Thrift shops where I live aren't as productive in interesting stuff like in the US or U.K., the ones that have interesting vintage things are priced like fashion shops.

I had the same problem last year. The collar on my 69 Star Sportswear had seen better days and I wanted a good replacement. My tailor suggested that I look at eBay to see if I couldn't find a good deal on a vintage mouton fur coat to use as a donor. I lucked out, for $25 I found a nice dark brown coat and the the replacement collar looks as good as new!
I'm not sure if shipping charges to Australia make this strategy prohibitively expensive. If not, it's a good way to go.

I thought about this answer but surely if import regulations would include something such as this then it would not be possible to import leather goods, jackets shoes fur coats or otherwise.
Those so called Beaver coats may be a good cheap source, I have some skin someplace but already promised I'm afraid(when I find it). It is just sheepskin made to resemble a more expensive skin. Mouton dressed as lamb you could say, or should that be beaver.
