Here is my new Mayser.......shared by our friend mayserwegener.....it is really, really, sweet!!! Apparently from the 50's, it has some really nice features.....the "pull down" ribbon treatment, it has a real nice soft kettle roll to the brim (much like a Stratoliner), AND it has a really cool bound brim....two rows of stitching with a hint of the binding showing on top, and a 1/4 inch of binding on the bottom.....
This hat has VERY malliable felt.....took my shallow center dent and deep front piches right away......
I am sure my pictures will not do it justice.....

PS...this hat is really minty.....sure was not worn much.....I was a wreck turning down the sweat to get a shot of the blocking tag....leather is really nice, but has a sort of thin shellac finish......

Mark, Thank you posting the photos! Yes there is coating on the sweatband so I only took a quick peek at the paper label. Also be careful with the plastic tip protector because it's light weight. I think this hat should look sharp birm up or down.

Yep......I was nervous about getting that label shot. And yes, that is an early thin tip protector and they are quite delicate.....
It DOES look great with the brim turned up or snapped down in front. Probably would look good "down all around" as they say too. A sort of German three way!!
I really like the height and fullness of the crown too. Yes, I will wear this a lot, but only under ideal conditions where I don't have to worry about it. It really is a great example of German craftmanship.....

I have some other Mayser Soft Felts from around the same time period with the coating on the sweatband. It's definitely a versatile form. I am happy that you like it. :)

Some German hat industry adverts (apologies if any or all of these have been posted before). I found these on the Wirtschaftswundermuseum website, a collection of German adverts and magazine covers from the 1950s and 60s. Worth a browse through if you're into that kind of thing.

Nice find Steve. On the website of the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin, you can check out old telephone directories. The one for 1941 does indeed list C.W. Borchert: http://digital.zlb.de/viewer/image/15849340_1941/368/#topDocAnchor

According to this old receipt from 1898, the firm was founded in 1838:

You can see one of their top hats with original hatbox on the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek website (or at the Museum Europäischer Kulturen in Berlin):

I couldn't find any information about the firm after 1941 straight away (chances are the factory didn't survive the war). They are no longer listed in the 1951 phone book, but a shop (not factory) turns up called Borchert-hüte with an address on the Kurfürstendamm. I think you actually have one of their hats. I wonder if there's any relation to C.W. Borchert.
