Glorious felt, Rick! Super Royal Deluxe! I like that felted edge.
Thanks! The photos in the auction listing were poor but I took a flier on it anyway. I really like it. Not really my style but it is a really nice hat in fantastic shape.

The felt is buttery soft and pliable. It arrived open crown and I gave it a quick dry crease. This one never will need any steam.

Incredible. You can almost guess how sweet the felt is from your pictures. A felt ribbon/bow isn't my preferred style, either, but I wouldn't turn down a stunner like that!

Dang! Sweet looking lid. I, personally, would replace that feltbelt with a proper ribbon but I do that with all of that style band.

Normally, I'd agree with you, moe, but I think that one looks pretty good. I've always done the same, but the Game Bird I recently picked up with a felt ribbon isn't going to be touche either, "for historical purposes." Plus, it doesn't look too bad.

I think the only one I have still with the felt band is the black Jay Lord I got from you. I did just get a 50 yard spool of 1 1/2" cotton/rayon in white to experiment with, so a Giants orange band may be in it's future...:)

Stefan Esders "Velour", 59cm, Crown Open 6 inches, Brim 2 3/4 inches probably later 1930s early 1940s. I picked this up from a non Ebay seller near Vienna. It was made for the famous Vienna department store Stefan Esders but no company mark on the paper label. It was most likely made by one of the Vienna hat companies. The felt is a fantastic darkish Gray Velour.

Finally getting around to posting this one. Its been around for several days. I've been wanting a Stetson 100 for some time and they rarely come up in my size. After looking for several years for an OR, two pop up in about ten days. I am officially outa the market place for awhile.

The good: The felt on this thing is some of the smoothest I've handled. The closest hat i have to the finish of this one is the Cavanagh 100. The sweat is soft and pliable w/o any issues. No mothing or bad stains. The case is in good shape but lacks the plastic insert. It fits.

The bad: The hat came in looking as I expected it to but is considerably stiffer than i had hoped for. No where near the Cavanagh, the RD OR, 3X or my Resistol 25's to name a few. But the finish of the felt is far superior on this one, with the exception of the Cavanagh. The stitching on the sweat began to pop as soon as I began to condition the sweat. It was soon apparent that the sweat would have to be removed and reattached. All the cotton thread in the sweat just disintegrated, even the sweat bow and size tag fell off. The sweat stitching was exposed below the ribbon and after I removed the ribbon, bow and sweat, I was amazed at the sweat stich pattern. It looked as if a one armed blind man with no legs was stitching sweats on a treadle sewing machine. I did follow the same stitch pattern when reattaching the sweat. I was able to pull the ribbon down some when reattaching it. The tailing ens of the bow had been stitched to the hat, in the photos slight damage caused by this can be seen. Overall it's a fine hat and I'm fairly pleased with results after getting it back together and posted. "Open Road" appears nowhere on this hat.

Sure ... we believe you.

Love this description! Sorry the hat had issues, but it sounds like you solved them. Now you'll be on the lookout for one that is better. :D
