My "Bike Helmet Covers" were actually born from frustration and self-pity. Frustration from having to wear a helmet while cycling to my local Post Office to deliver parcels (risking a steep fine when wearing a beret instead) and self-pity from not being able to buy one of those beautiful Radiovka inspired bike helmets by Czech designer Ondrej Stanek.
Despite a great design (including safety lights!), the helmet never went into production...

Daan's bike helmet beret reminds me of the helmets worn by British paratroopers landing in Normandy,
at least as portrayed in "The Longest Day".

Very good news from Boinas Elósegui - much sooner than I anticipated, the new Exposición Grandes and Txapelduns in Caqui have arrived; a custom made colour that is only available at South Pacific Berets.
Much has been posted here the last couple of weeks on differences, better and worse, of the berets made by Boinas Elósegui, but like Nico commented: these berets are tough as nails and really, there are no alternatives of this quality in the exceptional plateau of the Txapeldun in 372mm. Needless to say I just had to take one in each size out for myself!
And, the complete opposite in plateau: the small diameter Super Lujo 242mm is back in stock, plus ta brand new slightly wider 255mm model!

"tough as nails" does indeed describe the SL. Hard to beat into submission I would add. If you like your beret big and holding its shape, no matter the weather, its the way to go. A true reality shield.
But my new Foulard Alpin from BA is cutting into the SL's head time at the Moment. So many berets and only one head.

Prominent boinero, Holocaust survivor and sculptor Alfred Tibor died one week ago on 18 March.
Tibor was born Alfred Goldstein in Konyar, Hungary in 1920. Denied formal training because of his Jewish faith, he taught himself gymnastics in high school. "The more they were pushing me down and degrading me, the more I wanted to be better than others," he said. "I wanted to prove it: I am not a dirty Jew; I am a boy, and I have ambition." Tibor eventually qualified for the Hungarian team for the 1936 Summer Olympics, but when he went to register for the team, he was denied when the team discovered he was Jewish. Tibor was not allowed to compete as a member of the Hungarian team in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. "I was kicked out. I was kicked out because I was Jewish," Tibor said. "That time, the sky was falling apart."
In 1940 Tibor was forced to be a slave laborer for a Hungarian Army labor battalion. Eventually he was captured by the Soviet Army and spent six years as a prisoner in a Siberian prison camp. Of the 273 men in his labor battalion sent to the prisoner-of-war camp, he was only one of two to survive.
After his release (in 1947!), he worked for nine years as a government exhibition designer. In 1956, two months after the Hungarian Revolution, he fled the country with his wife and two children because he feared a return of anti-Semitic sentiment. They emigrated to the United States in 1957, where he worked as a commercial artist in Miami for 16 years until moving to Columbus, Ohio, to pursue sculpture full-time.
Tibor has stated that he believes he did not lose his life during the Holocaust and World War II so he could eventually create art to capture and evoke human emotions. "Art for art’s sake is not enough," he has said.
Tibor's first commissioned sculpture was completed in 1974. Today his work can now be found in nearly 500 private collections and museums while his large outdoor statues can be seen in Ohio and around the world. Among the locations of his statues is the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem.

Is it blue?
Below are photos of my BA universel in black (noir) and my BA universel in blue (marine). Under certain light conditions, it's actually quite hard to tell them apart. Also, the shade of blue is very dark -- almost black.
If I did not know it was blue and did not have a black (noir) beret with which to compare it, I might assume that it was black or nearly black.

Interesting pictures, GrayEyes. I have seen certain clothes where the difference between black and a dark navy was only visible side by side, and in certain light.
