It was France, no vendor, the makers of Auloronesa, I am trying to help them out a return cost is expensive

This beret is made from a quite heavyweight wool, 210gr for a 34cm diameter is a lot and this stabilizes the beret. Its was broken in quite fast and does keep its shape well.
By comparison, the Super Lujo Txapeldun from Boinas Elosegui weights a scant 165gr in this size, but is quite stiff and keeps thus its shape. It takes a lot of time to beat it in submission and a personal shape.
On the other side a 34cm Foulard Alpine from Boneteria Aurolonesa weights in at 144gr, will fit very quick and is, by comparison, quite floppy. Still it holds its shape well.

My two BE khaki berets from the SPB special arrived today.
The Boina Exposicion Classica (left) is like my old "Basica", as soft and coarse on the surface, measuring 315cm and weighting in at 82gr. Very soft and pliable, packs really small. The other is a Super Lujo with the old label, its smooth surface and unique mixture of stiffness and shape-keeping.

Very slight differences in colour. The difference is as much in the surface as in the gnat´s eyelash more green of the Super Lujo.

I photographed them in ambient light on an overcast day.
The black one, for comparisons purposes, is a BE Super Lujo.

For anyone looking for an additional beret besides the usual black or navy one, I do recommend these. Being of a dark and greenish variant, unlike the khaki normally used in trousers and shirts, this colour provides a good match to almost all other clothing. Daan made a very good and universal choice.

Good news for those in the northern hemisphere with summer approaching as fast as winter does here... The bérets en coton are Laulhère’s latest edition in cotton berets; berets that are revolutionary in comfort thanks to a method of knitting that has never been used before, creating a firm but supple beret that easily stretches to the individual wearer’s head’s shape and size without losing shape.

The 27cmø berets without cabillou are made of pure cotton; unlined for optimal air circulation and fitted with Laulhère’s silver pin on the side. Available in Anthracite/Blanc and Bleu Nuit/Noir.

One issue that continued to come back in the beret-survey last month, was the difficulty of finding cotton berets on the website. Alas, that's easily solved with one page listing all the varieties of cotton and eco berets at South Pacific Berets.

This is likely to be my last post for a while; off to the Beret Heartlands in 3 days time!
And a busy schedule too; meetings with the various beret manufacturers (discussing ideas, new models, colours, materials), meetings at the University of Bilbao, seeing French and Spanish writers and historians and hopefully, all going well, meeting the much admired artist/activist Agostin Ibarrola.

I expect I'll have plenty to share here by the end of May!

Meanwhile, for those of you who like me indulge in the history of the Chasseurs Alpins and collect Tartes, insignia and the like, I managed to buy a small number of genuine, vintage pre-WWII ID tags of both Chasseurs à Pied and Chasseurs Alpins in an auction.

These ID tags were in use from the 1920's through WWII, based on an earlier model used during the Great War (1914-18). The metal plate depicts the insignia of the battalion and is meant to be fitted on a 12mm wirelug; the classic wirelug wristwatch strap as used by British and French officers in WWI. The rear side of the insignia is blank (apart from manufacturer's name) for engraving name and details. These are genuine, vintage tags that have never been issued and are hard to find collector's items.

South Pacific Berets and Boneteria Aotearoa remain open during my absence 24/7; I'll try to respond to all questions whenever possible and all orders will be shipped on or before 25 May. Orders placed before 3 May will be posted within 24 hours, as usual.
