You really don't need to remove a thing. Soak the entire hat in Coleman fuel or Naptha, do it outside, use a metal container with lid if you have one. If not a plastic Tupper ware type with lid. Just do it away from your house, let it sit a few hours or overnight. If conditions are right outside, when you remove the, let excess drain into the soak, tank. The body will evaporate fumes off, and be dry in a few hours max. If you plan to do a fedora conversion, and you intend to put a new sweatband in it, then strip it. If not, and you just want a cleaned up hat, soak the entire thing. You may need 2 or 3 gallons, and proper size vessle. Get a funnel, and save the fuel for another day, another hat cleaning.
