Exactly, though there are some tartans that don't look very good with brown so one tries to make sure the sporrans and belt are simple.

You don't see those tartan socks worn with the kilt enough.They are more expensive though but look great especially with the shoes that have buckles on the front.

It's a nice one. I Like the colours.I'm an Elliott. We have the ancient or modern colours available. I really prefer the muted tones of the ancient one best.

Olive, my husband's tartan is Stuart of Bute. He doesn't really consider himself a Scot, despite his father hailing from Kilmarnock. His mindset is you're one thing or the other, as opposed to 'half this, half that, half something else" that you often get in the US. His parents settled in his Welsh mother's town, which makes him a Welshman through and through. (But it was convenient he had a family tartan when it came time to get a kilt for the pipe band.)

I help host a Robbie Burns night each year.
This year as I was saying goodbye to people as
They were leaving , so many admitted sheepishly,
I'm not really Scottish you know.

My answer to them all was that I believe we are
All allowed to be honorary Scotsman /women on
Robbie burns day, just like we are all Irish on st.
Paddys day.

That is one beautiful kilt - is it a tweed or just a very small set tartan? Also, it looks like it wraps right over left, so the opening in the apron is on your left...I've only see kilts where the opening is on the the wearers right...

I think, judging from the look of the waistcoat buttoning (the jacket buttoning is less clear to me), that the picture is laterally inverted, so the pin actually is on the wearer's right.

Correct, the photo is inverted as it was on a camera phone self timer. The tartan is the oldest recorded known and is known as Border tartan or Shepherds tartan & is the official tartan of Northumberland on the Scottish Borders. Due to a fragment found in a clay pot near Hadrians Wall dated to around 60 AD, we know it dates to at least the Roman period but likely is earlier.
The simplest of tartan weaves using only black and white.

Ah, now I see the Border tartan. Didn't appreciate that at all with the resolution of the pic in the second photo.
