Hatbox Homage

Ok....so now I will have two of these boxes........

one from a friend with his fathers OR in it and one from the 'Bay" and it is on its way to me as I write this (has a mode edge "Royal Stetson" in it).........

QUESTION, when were they introduced and how long were they used before the switch to these boxes..

I seem to be seeing a LOT of these (cheaply made) black and white boxes lately and almost always with a small "stingy brim" hat from the sixties or seventies....... the tan and red boxes are definitely better made and look a lot like the earlier oval boxes of very similar color and design.

I did not find others listed in this thread...........so am curious as to the dating of both of these Stetson boxes.

I've been looking for, but have not yet found, a photo here on the FL of John Wayne doing a Stetson promo. The shot is, I believe, from the mid-50s and there are several of the square, red/brown boxes around him.

Not sure when the white ones were introduced.

Can anybody tell me anything about this old Dobbs hat box? Decade? What might hav been in it? Picked it up at an antique mall for a couple bucks last weekend.

Picked this up this weekend while "antique hunting"....... It has one of the inserts.....pretty good shape....will shore it up with some good acid free glue.....
Has a copyright date of 1941 printed on it.....until now I had not heard of Society Club Hats. Like their "styles of today with a touch of tomorrow"..........Very pleased with this find.....

Nice black and yellow Stetson with a star motif. For $10 on the bay, couldn't pass it up. The Stetson logo has the stars in the upper left. I am guessing early 1950s? The box top has a woman's name written on it.

Those boxes were used heavily in the 40s

Since first logging on to this lounge from a non hat life, amongst other inspired musings I've pondered upon the form of the vintage hat box, as so have many of you, the silohuette of it's shape and an averaged tone seems (platonically) burned into my mind, maybe from its ubiquitous use in art at a guess from picasso (i'm no art fine connoisseur) to the backdrop art of the Tom and Jerry shows of early childhood. They form a powerful shape yet all I've collected so far is a tonne of bloody square boxed corrugated cardboard. I miss the cylindrical oval and yet I've never owned one. Certainly my mother had some less durable versions stored over a closet, and aunts would arrive before weddings with similar amongst luggage, but I mourn their passing nostalgically and invent an age that never so much existed but is often created by the 'wine stain pink' bespectacled view of the passing of life.

Posted a question about this tiny Stratoliner Box. Picked up off Ebay a week ago. This box is about 25% smaller than a regular men's oval box. It will only fit a stingy, and then a little tight. No way a full brimmed Stratoliner could be shoe horned into this little beauty.

I needed a home for my Echter Borsalino Homburg from the Dutch Connection. Found this one on Ebay really cheap. Condition is fair, the straps are gone leaving a couple of scars. The Homburg fits just right. It is not one of the Roman Column styles I have seen often. I'm pretty sure the application of the labels and the customs tag may be fake. The Ile de France tag has writing with a date of 1951, have to get a powerful magnifier to see if it is live ink (probably a pipe dream). If nothing else, the labels and Borsalino advertisements printed on the box are cool. Has anybody got any ideas?

Looks like a great hat box, Mike... just a few extra stickers for flights; a historical touch. Lil' Fed's Borsalino box is very similar, minus the Air France stickers. 1950's is my guess, too.

These were actually ment to hold the Stat. You folded the brims in on the sides......was supposed to help keep that nice kettle flange the strats are known for......someone here has posted a little instruction sheet that showed how the hat was to go in the box.......

I'll have to put a "B-17" on my holy grail list. As an aviation historian, I could start a whole new series of hat desires. Boeings are well represented.

Thanks Mark, I'll have to see how a full size hat folds into this little box. Kind of cool, my first encounter. Someday, I'll have a real vintage Strat to stuff inside it. @moontheloon posted an answer in the questions thread with an image. You learn something new everyday.
