Looks good on you. It's a different feel to a fedora, but once you're used to it, very nice. I have a few (they tend to be vastly more affordable than a similar age / condition fedora, all other things being equal), and tend to wear them for 'occasions' (black tie, or graduation days, or weddings, that sort of thing), though sometimes also just general wear to the office. They can be somewhat casualised by adding a pinch - I like then that style. A more common hat than the fedora, and worn the same way, this side of the Atlantic rally until well into the thirties. In England they're now commonly called an "Anthony Eden" by a certain generation, after the long-serving Conservative foreign secretary who became Prime Minister for a brief period (1955-57). Also commonly associated with Churchill. In Ireland, many will associate them with Michael Collins during the negotiations of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, which led to the formation of the Irish Free State. (Prior to that, only two known photographs of Collins existed - a situation he had perpetuated, given that he was fighting a guerrilla campaign in which recognisability was not helpful; most of the photographs of him in the public domain in the short remainder of his life thereafter showed him in his CiC uniform). I'm sue there are plenty of others, though of course many modern British and Irish eyes will think first of Don Corleone before them.
Interesting about Collins, the Homburg being popularized by royalty but then how did Collins see himself? We'll never know.

View attachment 77271 View attachment 77272 View attachment 77273 View attachment 77274 pristine condition, i'd guess unworn. stiff as the day it was boxed in the factory. Thoughts anyone? You can see a date hand written on the box but that probably means nothing.

not sure about me in a homburg.
Karl, There isn't a company mark but I am guessing it's a UK source. I am basing this on the paper label that only has the UK size 7. As I mentioned Dunn & Co. sourced hats. For example going back to 1930s and earlier some of their Velour hats came from J.Hückel´s Söhne and Tonak post WWII. I also found out they sourced hats from Ebreichsdorfer S. J. Fraenkel Wien and maybe J. Heinr. ITA Wien. I even found a Dunn & Co Ltd old liner print plate (probably from JHS / Tonak) in the Czech Republic.

Edward VII brought the original Homburg back from Homburg vor der Höhe (Bad Homburg) made by PH. Möckel Hutfabrik, Homburg vor der Höhe. In Egland the Homburg was originally consider a casual style hat (as were all Europe based Soft Felts) and evolved over time to become a formal style hat.

You might want to look through this thread and also post your Dunn & Co there.

Thankyou for putting all that together Steve. Fascinating links and research.
I'm presuming mine dates from much later, 70s or 80s maybe. The liner is glued on, so a fairly ordinary version.

Karl, Thank you. Yes probably 1970s but it still has a nice form. Homburgs are fun to wear. Today most people have no idea of their formal past (actually first casual, then formal, both today).

I love the leather case. That’s as far as my ignorance will allow me to comment, but I can just picture your valet loading your luggage, including this hat box, onto a steam train. This old “stuff” is great and connects us to our past. Looking forward to seeing you wearing the hat too.

I think I will look silly on it, but I will give it a try.

Good for you for trying. I was hoping they would look good on me, but so far I haven’t found one I really like. When I wear mine my wife laughs and calls me “Mr. Banks.”

I thought this is how I would look:

Apparently it takes more than a hat.

The Henry Heath, which I ordered earlier, has not yet arrived,
but I have the brown G. A. Dunn meanwhile received by mail:

The velour felt is relatively short, but really great and super malleable
(though not as outstanding as pre-war JHS). The processing of the interior
(sweat and lining) as well as the ribbon work is as high quality as the "English Velour".
The hat was sold as 40's - the lettering on lining AND sweat is "G. A. Dunn & Co."
which would classify the dating as pre-war by the old commentary.
In my opinion, however, that doesn't match the shape - I think early/mid 50s fits better.
Comments on this!?

1st is seller's foto: best colour - Sorry, my pictures are very dark!

Matt, There are examples of post WWII Tonak made G. A. Dunn & Co. Velours. It's possible the Velour felt was sourced by a English hat company. Regardless it's a really fantastic!

Thanks for the info, Steve: I had read that somewhere in a comment of yours, too.
My question would be:
Would Dunn have written "Genuine English Velour" on it? Would that be possible?
Did English velour factories exist at all that are known?

We know or I know too little about English hat manufacturing...
Nevertheless: The velour and the hat in total are wonderful!

Matt, I don't have any details on English Velour production. I know the British government couldn't understand why the English Hat industry couldn't match Austrian Velour. A long while ago I came across an early 1930s government study but when I tried to find it recently I couldn't. I have seen photos of pre WWII "English Velour" Hats. There might some posted here. It's highly possible that your Velour was produced in England. The post WWII G. A. Dunn & Co. Tonak Velour Hats mention "Made in Czechoslovakia".

Here is a later Dunn & Co. Velour made by Ebreichsdorfer Filzhutfabrik S. J. Fraenkel.
