Great collection of hats, Jack!I like what has become known as the Old West style. My favorite crease is probably the Tom Horn. The brims I prefer usually fall in the range of 3-1/4" to 4" wide. I want my brims to be fairly flat with maybe just a bit of swoop in the front. I don't want much if any packer draw in the front or back, & not much fender roll on the sides.

I also really like what I call the Old West gentleman's dress hat for special occasions. Most will have brims that are fairly flat with a small kettle curl:

Would you say that the Tom Horn, Gus and Montana are all the same crease or is there some variation I'm not appreciating?

Thank you guys for the kind comments...they are much appreciated. I do have a few more Stetsons, etc but these are among my favorites & demonstrate nicely the styles I was trying to point out.
Charlie, the scales are antique pharmaceutical scales made by OHAUS, The Western Machinery Co., Wichita, KS. Are you a scales collector?

Thanks Doc. There can be slight variations between the Tom Horn & the Gus, I think. Mainly in the rake & the pinches or dents. Obviously Tom Horn was a real person...if you go to Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming & Montana it will be called the Tom Horn. If you go to Texas & about anywhere else where Larry McMurtry or the Lonesome Dove miniseries are known they will only know it as the Gus. There are several creases & variations known as the Montana, I think.
I have been to what is left of the Swan Land & Cattle Co., the true location where young Willie Nickell was killed & Tom Horn's gravesite.

I already have enough problems, Jack, so no, I don't collect scales. I grew up in St. Johnsbury, VT, where the Fairbanks platform scale was invented circa 1830. The first improvement in weighing technology in about 1000 years. So, I just have more cognizance of scales, as well as a couple here and there around my place. As a kid, my father's family operated a metal recycling business and had a fully mechanical in-ground tractor-trailer scale from Fairbanks, too. I believe that scale is still there, in some form.
Just weighing in on the matter, here...

I've got a SLOW Carpenter doing some remodeling , and I've got them put up to keep the Spackle Dust off of as much as I can . Hopefully he'll be done soon , but at the rate they're going it maybe Christmas 2018 , but I hope not . You know I take terrible pictures . The ones that look good somebody else took without me knowing it was coming . Thanks though , as soon as I can I'll get on it . Spur me on once you know this is over .

@Hurricane Jack That's quite the collection you have! I'm also pleased that you called it like it should be.... it's a "Tom Horn" or "Montana Peak" not a "Gus"....
Just one of those nit picky kind of things.....but....
They're all nice but my favorite is the O'Farrell... I really like the color!

I like my brims flat with a lil' bit of swoop in the front and back.
High fenders and shovel brims aren't my thing.
Big brims. 4" or more. My 3 1/2" brims are almost all stored in boxes.
BTW great collection. Not much (lol) but great

Hi Jack, I need a little clarification on the terms you're using. The one I'm not sure of is "packer draw" I don't know what you mean by it.. can you explain? In your quote above you refer to "a bit of swoop" and "packer draw". I've been calling it rocker or dip to the brim...I think this is maybe what you are calling "swoop" or do you mean "packer draw"?

Thats what I call a Montana Peak , the other is called a Montana Crease , among other things depending where you are .

Latigo, it's hard to describe a 3 dimensional concept using only a 2 dimensional picture but I'll do my best.
In case you haven't seen a picture of how the open crown Akubra Woomera comes the 4" brim has a very high roll on the sides.
My aim was to flatten the brim taking out the high fender roll & leave just a slight perceptible edge curl.
I wanted no edge curl across the front of the brim because I wanted a very slight swoop instead of the brim being totally flat. Think of a swoop as going across your forehead from side to side, L to R or R to L. An edge curl & a swoop are incompatible together ( at least at my skill level they are). The swoop is almost imperceptible in the Woomera photo below but was the only pic I could quickly find.
Here's a pic of Ben Johnson showing plenty of swoop going from side to side across the front of his brim. Think of it like a smile.
A packer draw or drawdown is on the front &/or back of a brim across the width of the brim. It gives the hat more of an arched look when viewed from the side. It's not smiling! It can be very subtle like this Rand he calls the Brushpopper.
Or it can be more extreme for protection from the elements, as seen often in the Australian outback type hats. You can clearly see how this is an arch from front to back whereas the swoop above is a smile from side to side.

That's the key I was trying to make earlier in the thread. In the areas where Tom Horn roamed it is more likely to be called either the Tom Horn or the Montana crease (regardless of slight variations) than it is to be called the Gus.
