I bet it's a lot more affordable, Hudson. These days a nice haircut and style can cost upwards of $50 even here, and closer to $200 in a big city like New York. Paisley, I wish we had an Aveda school here! I love their work & their products.

We do have a London Tea Room in my neighborhood, run by two sweet English people, which serves a cream tea with sandwiches & all the fixings for $30. That seems like a very reasonable fee to pay for being pampered and treated nicely. Unfortunately they have a "no costume" policy so I might have to tone down my customary late '30s outfit. I wonder whether they would believe me if I told them that in my universe, this is everyday gear, not a costume??

I've now had the pleasure of being "sneak photographed." Which I found was a step above in annoyance level of anything I've ever encountered. You want my picture, ask, I'll even strike a pose if you're nice. But don't be all sneaky.

I would go to the tea room. I love tea rooms. I'd call and ask about the costume thing... they might be trying to avoid the subset of people who treat it like a joke.

There's a place near where we live that has teas for ladies and their mothers (my daughter is not yet old enough) around mothers day. I so want to go. I think the minimum age is 6. Maybe it's 5.

Why does a tea room need a "no costume" policy? I can't image its target is nice people like you who dress in vintage, so what is it for?

I heard your no food reward, and I get it! But, go to your place of choice where you can order and enjoy a nice salad. A salad is ALWAYS much better when someone else makes it; an affordable indulgence, I think.

Test the water. Just turn up at random wearing what you want to wear on the day, explain that you will be coming along for tea on so & so date, make a gesture about your attire and simply ask: "OK if I wear this?"

We have whiled away many a happy hour on the Island of Cyprus. That's where I learned the contents of a Greek Salad. Fresh olives, feta cheese, diced peppers, red onions, chopped tomatoes and plenty of green trimmings. It's a meal that we have eaten many times in the current heatwave.

And, it's known to put hair on your chest! Nothing like a nice, fresh salad, best made by someone else, though.
