...Kids today don't have to grow up with that existential threat, so they turn to zombie apocalypses...
Actually, they do but they are made unaware of it, largely by the media. Contrary to popular misconceptions, China and Russia are not US allies and both are nuclear powers. Iran and North Korea are openly, publicly hateful of America and her allies and both are scrambling at top speed to develop nuclear weapons and next to nothing is being done to stop it (aside from verbal condemnation).
I believe there will be a WWIII and it will be nuclear (or "newkewler" if you're George W Bush). Whether it happens in my lifetime or not is what remains to be seen.
I think when it hits, only the very wealthy will be spared the worst of it but only for a few short years (less than 5). Then even the rich will suffer right along side the poor because everyone will be poor. Money will be worthless. What will have worth will be only basic necessities and skills.
And woe to anyone who has skills because you'll be a prime target for kidnapping and slavery. I'm a nurse and a former Army medic and former EMT. I'm the kind of person that gangs and bandits would want to keep as a slave. Doctors, dentists, pharmacists, engineers, mechanics, welders, carpenters, veterinarians, paramedics, etc. these are people that warlords will want to keep. Of course, attorneys and politicians will probably be hanged publicly LOL!
Somebody mentioned being called a "survivalist" back in the day. They're still called survivalists. They're also called "preppers" since they're preparing for the collapse of civilization. Not a ridiculous notion IMO. at a minimum, we should prepare for the natural disasters common to our location (hurricane, earthquake, tornado, flood, forest fires, etc.)

As for me, while y'all are hoarding bullets and beans, I'm collecting up all the toilet paper.
....yeah, we'll see who's king then won't we? LOL!

At least get the facts straight, Iran is now prevented from developing a nuclear weapon in the foreseeable future and by all accounts is complying with their obligations as outlined in the nuclear weapons deal. And North Korea has had nuclear weapons for many years, they're just trying to develop longer range intercontinental ballistic missiles.

I'm aware of the facts. I was going for brevity over specifics because those details were essentially irrelevant to my point. They don't change anything in regard to what I said. But thanks for sharing with the group.

Of course, when the SHTF, now I'm charging you double for toilet paper! [emoji12]

My thoughts exactly! All the horsehide in the world is not going to save me, unfortunately.
Plus, all that clothing would just weigh me down.

An amusing thread concept, and appropriate in light of George Romero's recent passing. I expect what I would realistically be wearing is a bloodied, torn-up version of whatever I had on when I got turned into a zombie!

Hitchens Razor applies to this...
Since we are discussing a future event, any number of reasonable possibilities exist. One cannot demand the burden of proof because the event does not yet exist in reality. Add to that, I prefaced my comment with "I believe..." which is not an assertion, but a statement of belief. Beliefs don't necessarily demand a burden of proof. Otherwise, there would not be so many diverse religions in the world (since they cannot all be correct in their beliefs). Only time will reveal whether it be true or not. Therefore, my belief is just as valid as another. I don't think that razor applies to this because the potential for what I have stated does exist, while certain proof of a--yet unfulfilled--future event does not.

It's certainly more reasonable than belief in a zombie apocalypse.
It's a fun thread in any case.

For me, police riot gear (assuming I could salvage same) until well out of the danger zone. When in aconfirmec safe zone, I'd dress as I pleased (based on availability).

Transport-wise, I'd liberate myself a decent-sized camper van which could take a couple of motorcycles within on the move (as well a bicycles for short-distance travel where silence is a must).

I've always considered that I'd arm myself with a combination of longbow, crossbow, slingshot, and blades. Blades as a last resort of course - individually zombies aren't much threat as long as you see them coming: the main danger is being surrounded and closed in by a horde. Always better to stick to picking them off at a distance. Also, slingshot ammo / crossbow bolts / arrows can be fashioned much more easily than bullets, which require a specialist skill to manufacture once they run out - as well as potentially dangerous runs on gunstores while those remain stocked. Another thing is that the weapons I favour operate silently: nothing will attract a bigger herd like a gunshot sound: zombies are attracted to noise as well as scent.

IIRC, Romero did both Night of the Living... and Dawn of...

Anyway, yes it's a sad day for horror movies. But, hey...maybe he'll be back.

Night, Dawn, Day, Land, Diary, and Island.

The first three have been remade (Night in 1990, directed by Tom Savini; Dawn in, if memory serves, 2002, and Day thereafter). I believe Romero was executive producer on all the remakes.

Ballistic level Riot gear.... A modern day version of metal armor.

Worf

That's the stuff.

All this zombie stuff makes me recall the mid 1980s when my friends and I thought that a nuclear war was just around the corner. We were what was called at the time Survivalists and we had all this stuff ready for real. Forget zombies, we were worried about the Soviets. We all saw a film made at the time called Threads, couldn't be any worse than a zombie attack. I still have some of my stuff, so if your zombies do come out to play I, for one, will be ready!!

I saw Threads in the television room of a caravan site in Scotland, on its original broadcast. I was nine, about to turn ten. Nothing else I've ever seen has given me the willies like it; I was obsessed with the whole thing for a few years after. I keep meaning to buy the DVD and rewatch now....

@ProteinNerd Max Rockatansky didn't have to deal with Zombies. This get-up is more useful for that scenario...

Looks in teresting - what is it?

Given that the zombies would be slow zombies, not the ridiculous fast zombies, I agree that the weather and environment is going to be the biggest threat to most survivors. All you gotta do is get soaked by rain on a cool day once without being ready for it and you probably won't survive, even if the nearest zombies are a hundred miles away.

No real guarantee what speed they would move at.... I rather suspect we'd see fresh ones able to move fairly quickly, then movement diminishing as the corpse rotted.

I would probably stay in my home, so I guess all of my clothing? I think that leather and/or denim would be my go-to because bite protection, depending on the weather.

Basically anything with supposed short sleeves so I can be photographed performing the 'Zombie Strangle Hold' These sleeves hang perfect by the way, I just feel the Zombie Strangle needs a little explanation.
Your jacket fits perfect but by extending your arms into an unnatural stretch, fooling you to believe your sleeves are too short. Unless you are a 'Zombie' there is I believe an Aero hotline always available at the factory ;)

I don't think wearing something that used to be alive is smart thing to do when the dead come back as reanimated corpse especially ones that can stand on its own... I would wear denim jacket, probably will tie up my leather with bicycle chain until 28days later when the virus subsides, not going to burn them... I'm not crazy.
