The hats were part of the demob suit. Soldiers were given a choice of felt hat or flat cap. According to the Imperial War Museum the full package included:

threre was a fleabay uk, 57cm or 58cm brown felt fedora, maybe 2" brim, advertising itself as one of these in the last few weeks. I think it sold though.
It would be interesting to know of the quality and manufacture of these hats.

Yes, this is what I've found. That does not mean that new hats for vets didn't fly off the shelves in 1945-46 when they returned. Now they are in Moon's hat room...
