As for the products already available during WW2, you can also go with Brylcreem (light hold, can be restyled anytime, neat shine) or Sweet Georgia Brown Red (medium to high hold, great shine, not easily washable).

I've been using regular Murray's since late last year, as the "Super Light" variety is definitely thinner than it used to be and doesn't have the same hold.
