Hat Storage Advice

The closet idea will be appropriated. However, I'm looking for a source for the kind of hat box that folds closed, with a plastic handle. Like the kind you get from Miller Hats or Panama Bob. Any suggestions?

Thanks Jeff. But was looking more for picking up a pack of maybe 20, folded and ready to be put together, if I could find a wholesaler. My local hattery has Bailey boxes for $6 or $8, I think.

USPS Priorty Mail Large boxes seem to be a perfect size for storing fedoras, and they can be acquired free of charge. Matter of fact, the post office will ship them to you if you submit a request. :)

They measure 12" x 12" x 5-1/2". Found them to be a tight squeeze for my Campdrafts, but they may work well with smaller sizes/ brims.

Thanks for the comment, 89quattro. You got me thinking, and I may have found a better alternative with ULine. They have a 14 x 14 x 7 box that can be bought in quantities of 25 for $1.30 each, with larger quantities at lower prices. If you go to the 14 x 14 x 8 size you can get them in any quantity of 25 of more for $0.94 each.

Here's a link: Uline 14" boxes

I built my own. I got a Pratt PRA0090 Recycled Corrugated Cardboard Single Wall Standard Box with C Flute, 16" Length x 16" Width x 8" Height, (Pack of 25) for $40.00 on Amazon. Sacrficed a couple of the boxes to form the oval hat support inside of the box (hats should always be store brim up to prevent any deformation). Glue gunned them in place added a twine closer/carrier and voila a hat box. I also got a cedar 3" x 3" x 3' turning block from ebay sliced off a 3" x3" x1" piece put in the box to keep out those pesky moths and voila again I now have a handmade fedora protected hat box. Also 2 points more, 1 it will fit cowboy hats and fedoras (I've got a stetson "Tom Mix" which fits in it perfectly) and 2 don't let the cedar block touch the hat. I velcro it in place so I can remove it to sand the cedar occasionally to keep it fresh.

Awesome moontheloon did you build those yourself? Or did Keith build it for you?

Not sure what you're asking

These are boxes that either hats came in or that I bought empty and put hats in

If you know moon the loon then you know Keith. If you don't know moon the loon then you never knew Keith and therefore he didn't build it.

Looked for hat boxes to travel with never found one in the price range (cheap) I liked. just returned from a 10 day cruise to Alaska took 2 - Akubra Stylemasters. 2-Stratoliners, and a Stetson Montecello. I used an old Dorfman Pacific hat shipping box that some hat came in long ago (same box went to Alaska 3 years ago). The box is 14.5x15.5x11.25 and has the hat support inside, the trick is take the box as carry on never check it. Carefully "nest" the hats inside, wear one carry 4-5 and you should be good to go. I have also taken on flights (longest 8 hrs) the box fits in overhead. I have a long bungee cord keeps the box closed with a woven handle attached that makes it easy to carry for me or the wife

I saw the hat from across the room, planted atop a pole in the crowded antique store. I knew in an instant what it was and that if it fit, I wanted it. A shopper was milling about looking at items all around. "Oh please don't look up," I thought. With social distancing in place, I had to wait my turn to enter the booth. As soon as she left I swooped in to make the grab. A vintage Stetson Open Road Twenty, size 7 1/4. Dented and bashed more like a traditional fedora as opposed to its traditional cattleman's crease, perhaps shoppers, and the booth owner didn't know what they had. A little bit of steam and shaping and I'm now the owner of a fantastic looking hat.

I have the Fedora Lounge members to thank. I've been eyeing this particular hat for some time. Reading everything I can find about it. Stetson ads are fine, but your extended knowledge is priceless.

Now that it has found its new home I want to take care of it the best I can, which leads me to my question. How do y'all make DIY boxes/containers for your hats? Attached are photos of my attempt, using a plastic file box, a cut-out side of yet another plastic tote and cardboard, cut with slots.

Please show me what you've come up with!
