These days it's rare when someone hands out cigars to celebrate the birth of their child. Maybe "birthday cigars" and "baby cigars" should be mentioned in the "Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?" thread?

Not a fedora, but a képi.
My great-grandfather, 173rd Infantry Regiment (Corsica). Started WWI as a sergeant and finished as a captain, surviving 4 years including being shot twice, wounded by artillery and nearly being gassed. He won the Médaille Militaire (like a Silver Star in US terms) at Verdun.
I had the privilege of knowing him before he died at 94 years old and is the only old school man of principle and strength of personal will I have ever met in person - I stuck my tongue out at him when I was 5 and he backhanded me so fast and so far I caught air, but I deserved it and perversely feel privileged by the punishment !?!

My 89 year old mother passed away April 26. I have been going through some old photograph albums and found a few photographs of my father and grandfather wearing hats I thought I would share.
Sorry for your loss, Musher. Lost my mom about a year ago. Those are some great pics and thanks for sharing. Location? There is a thread for this that a lot of folks outside the hat forum enjoy. You might think of posting them here.

Thank you. Lake Carmel, NY. They lived in NYC but my grandfather had a second home there.
Great to see these. We tend to think of our parents as older or elderly people, but these pictures remind us of their youth. Brings them even closer.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss Musher; it's never easy to lose someone you care about. I like your father's taste in hats, and I think he and your grandfather wore them well.

I have posted the picture on the left previously in this thread.
However, it had never occurred to me to put the picture on the right next to it.
On the left is my mom and her dad (my gf), taken in about 1938. On the right is me, my daughter and my wife taken in about 1994.
We had taken the 1994 picture before I had even known the 1938 picture existed.
Everyone that knows us always said I resembled my gf. The pictures are spooky but leave me warm and smiley, though.

1938 seems to have been a good year for grandfathers.
Your dad seems to be about the same age as my mom and my daughter when their respective pictures were taken.

I don't think they're spooky at all. Fascinating and charming, but not spooky.
Somewhere around here I have a photo of my mom taken when she was about a year old, and another photo of my brother's second daughter (my niece and Goddaughter) also taken when she was about a year old. They're posed and dressed somewhat similarly, but the facial resemblance is so close that some of our friends thought they were both photos of my Goddaughter taken on different days. Not bad considering the photos were taken approximately 63 years apart.

Yeah, maybe not spooky. I was just thinking that the juxtaposition was maybe weird enough to possibly be thought of as spooky. Maybe. Or maybe not.

I actually still have my grandfather's service uniform cap. The leather band has long since rotted away, but the rest of the hat is still in remarkable condition. I'm assuming it must have shrunk in the wash at some point, because I otherwise have NO idea how it would have fit his head, which was the same size as mine.

My grandfather CG Brock from 1942, it looks as if they had been squirrel and coon hunting.
He in his fedora and leather jacket!!!
