G1 Restoration advice

Well gents, I am now the proud owner of a 1964 Star Sports G1! It's actually in better shape than I initially posted. I rubbed some candle wax on the zip and its loosened up pretty well but it seems to be tarnish which is making it stiff so I might run a dremel with a soft polishing wheel over it to hopefully make it more serviceable. The knits aren't moth eaten, they are a little fuzzy round the waist band so I might try shaving them lightly to tidy that up.

I noticed when I got it home that there is some stich holes on the left hand breast. I assume that was an name tag from when the jacket was issued?

Thanks for your assistance fellas, especially the prompt advice of Elmarrow and Atticus. I was on the point of walking away but I left it in the hands of fate waited to see what you guys thought of the label and went for lunch to kill a bit of time. I got your messages so I got footed it back again and bought it.

Photos to follow shortly!

Garry

Really looking forward to seeing pics of your G1, Garry. Sounds like yours is a great find after a little cleaning up! I've spent the past few weeks searching for a nice vintage G1 - came across quite a few good ones, but unfortunately none in my size that were in appropriate condition for the money some eBay sellers seem to want.

P.s. , thanks for your help/pics in my B6 thread a few months back - mine arrived from Aero and it fits spot on. Your measurements and advice really helped...cheers!

I really admire DumpsterDiver.

That guy can wear a 100% original G-1 no matter how ratty it is, and look GOOD.
When I do it, I look homeless.

I can't find any replacement knits that match the quality and color of my originals. It's such a waste of good jackets, maybe I should flip them to someone younger with more panache...

Watching your thread with interest from Perth WA.

I also get the "upload is too large blah blah..." when I try to upload photos from my missus' ipad , which she has to take then email them to my Hotmail account so I can get the pics into my pictures on my desktop

Success! I think it must be an apple thing DGM. I tried on the ipad but had to do it from windows in the end.

So here it is in its glory. As you can see its pretty dry in areas but I gave it a good hosing with leather conditioner (an extremely satisfying process) which has darkened a lot of the scurfed areas.

Looking objectively at the fit shots, I think the arms are a little snug on me (almost an indi rocker fit) but I can live with that.

That is a beautiful G-1 Lord Flashheart! The mouton on the collar is about as nice as I've ever seen and the fit looks spot on. I wouldn't worry about the arms, they ran snug on these jackets and yours look fine. Very well done sir!

Nice G-1! You can find very good replacement cuffs and waistband sets on eBay for $27.50 from a seller who's screen name is lb4041j; I've purchased many replacement knits from him and they are excellent quality.

Must be an iPad thing DGM. I transferred them to my windows computer and they loaded without issue.

On an iPhone I email them to myself - on either hotmail, iCloud and gmail it asks ‘what size image’ and I choose ‘medium’. I then open the email and save the pics to photos. These smaller files then will upload to the site.

That looks brilliant! Wouldn't worry about the fit, it looks great. Sounds cliched, but that leather looks full of character...very nice. A new set of knits and it will do very nicely indeed!

For those having trouble uploading pics, especially from an "i" device, have you considered Tapatalk?

Uploading pics, especially pics that are on your pad or phone could not be simpler. It downsizes them to acceptable sizes and it's no more difficult that putting a pic in a text.

Just a thought. Here's an upload for an example. This was taken on my iPad.

That's a beauty of a jacket. I agree with Thor that yours is the perfect shade of mouton that so many repro makers try to capture.

Who do you guys get to replace the knits on your jackets? Is this a job that a competent tailor could do?

I always use Byson leather as like you I am in the Uk. I had 4 jackets done by them and they do a fantastic job. I am no expert but once done they look like the original. Can’t fault them.

Thanks for that...do they provide their own knits or would it be best to buy some beforehand, and then send them to Byson to be installed?

That is a great G-1! It has enough character and mojo for ten jackets! Honestly, other than to stabilize it with some sort of mild leather treatment, I wouldn’t do a thing. Restoring that old girl would be like refinishing a 1957 Telecaster!

I got the knits from the chap on eBay listed on a reply here. He is great and once you contact him he will tell you the correct knits for your jacket. They are great quality
