Photos of hatters tools

Any oxidation on the metal pieces can be removed with a fine grit sandpaper or even a polishing wheel. I am assuming that they were never treated, and oils could transfer to a hat, so I don't think you'd want to oil them. After deoxidizing them, buffing them up should smooth them out. Then they just need to be maintained and cleaned regularly.

Note that I have no experience with these types of irons; I'd give the same advice on any ferrous metal that you're looking to recondition.

Sent directly from my mind to yours.
Thanks for that I did wonder whether soaking in motor oil was a good idea and had the feeling it might not be.
I know Coca Cola is a good rust remover as it contains phosphoric acid - I was a lab technician until recently, I have used it on old rusty sewing machine feet. I'll get the multi tool on the irons outside in a couple of day and go carefully. I might try the Coke first for a short while first.
Many thanks,
Ann

Have just seen something akin to this at a tool seller who says it is a hatter's iron and takes a slug of hot iron, slug missing. I should have taken a picture and will do next Tuesday - he's only open on market day here. He evidently had two although he couldn't locate the other one. Would they be of any interest to anyone?

Not wonderful pictures due to glass and reflection but this is the tool a local shop that specialises in old tools has. The owner says he has another one but neither have the slug with them. He couldn't find the other one but hasn't really looked hard for it. If it is of interest to anyone, he wants £55, I can purchase and post and you can cover the costs.
Regards,
Ann

What continues to amaze me is the geographic diversity of the hat makers I've sold tools to. I have, literally, sent them all over the planet. Belgium, Finland, England, Scotland, Spain, Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Austria, Germany, France, Wales, Ireland, and Denmark, just to name the countries I can remember. If only these folks would stop being so cheap and pay my airfare to hand deliver...

There is currently a flange stand on eBay if anyone is looking for one. Seller has it listed for 30.95+shipping. I’d buy it myself, but I just got one and can now copy it if I need more later.
