I think you stole that thing! @Bamaboots has a Churchill '100' if I remember correctly.

That Churchill is a nice hat. Not much mentioned about the 50 on the lounge though they made a few westerns and I've not seen many with a model name on the sweat. I have a beaver 25 with the name Longview printed on the order card under the sweat. It's an OR clone with a bit shorter brim. Alan and carouselvic both have a Churchill 100 made with beaver and vicuña. I'm interested in that "5 of 6" printed on the sweat.

@BobHufford, I believe you're thinking of my Cavanagh 100.

That's just the pic # printed on the pic, not the sweat. If you look there is 1 of 6, 2 of 6, etc on the previous pics.

I just purchased my first Stetson - purchased it outright rather than bidding because I loved it so much. It’s a 3X beaver and I’m quite sure it’s from the 50s even though the ad said it was from the 30s. I love this ribbon and the matching yellow trimming, and the felt looks like I could swim in it. Plus the box is terrific! I’m quite taken with the whole package!

Still, this was a hard choice since I’ve already got a bespoke hat on order. But I slept on it and woke this morning straight away with the thought, “I hope it’s still there!”

The seller doesn’t ship internationally but my mom will send it to Australia as my Christmas present - I’m flying out to Melbourne for New Years with old friends. Here’s hoping it fits!

Cheers,
Nathan

Thank you. I'll guess I'll see for myself soon enough. I'm not much of a western hat person but it might be too nice of a hat to undergo conversion to a fedora (particularly at my low skill level). The seller had hardly anything in the description and from his other items it looked like he was a scrounger who doesn't know much about his merchandise. With the buy it now price so low I knew I had the get it then or let it get away. If nothing else if could be fodder for a trade.

Looks (or could look) a lot like my Worth - Walden.

If you don't like it, let me know.

With all the bad purchases I've made and the times I've been burned on eBay I'm due for a steal. I just bought a Bee Hats western that was listed as new condition but the sweat was a dry-rotted brittle piece of something that could have once been leather.

I'll keep you in mind if this Churchill doesn't work for me. Maybe a package deal with a Bee that is in "new" condition?

I have a Resistol "beaver 30" , and have seen beaver 35 also. My Resistol is from '70-'72. I wonder if those same beaver designations were used for both Resistol and Churchill, and if it was during the same time period. I have only seen a few Churchill westerns. Beautiful hat.

I'd love to stumble on a 100 like Alan has:

That hat box lets you know that the hat is something special. And the hat....Wow!

Probably. Same with Dobbs. There are some Champ westerns too. Byer-Rolnick bought Churchill Hats before the 70's.

Very nice Nathaniel, you are amassing quite the collection. This place is dangerous.

My Bee Hats western that I had planned on using for a conversion. The listing said it was "like new" and that there were "no issues." The hat is fine except that the sweat has dried out and rotted. Not sure it's worth the expense and effort to sew in a new sweat.

And what's with the hideous ribbons/bands of this era? Who ever thought they looked good?

Yeah, I’ve got to figure out what I’m going to do with all these beautiful felts. I might gift one to a friend for Christmas and maybe delay the Northwest Hats order until the middle of the year. I can juggle two hats while traveling (one stingy and one wide brimmed) but more than that is going to be too much work!

Lots of crown to work with there. A new sweat is not that expensive. I've had Mike Miller replace a few and I think it was cheaper than $20 or so. Maybe Terry could have a go at it.

Terry has been helping me out, but he (and now I) sew them on by hand and it's a time consuming venture. I might see if the hatter located an hour from me can do them as someone proficient with the right sewing machine can make short work of it. I'd gladly pay $20.

A million of them must have been sold during the Urban Cowboy days. One could hardly enter a bar in the early 80's w/o seeing tons of feather hat bands and crocheted ones on cheap cowboy hats.

Edit: Meant to add this advertisement from the era.

I would hate to see this hat cut down in a conversion. Stagecoaches among others are a dime a dozen, so much better fodder for conversions.

This hat is safe from my amateur conversion attempts. If it's not a hat that I'll wear unaltered, I'll find it a good home. If I decide to sell it I'll post it here at the Lounge.

Joao does.

I suppose we all have our own ideas of what looks good.
