(Lone Watie's/Chief Dan George's hat leaves a lasting impression on me-- one of the few things I remember about the movie between watchings!)

I haven’t seen it yet but the plot is about a military escort for a respected Native American Chief back to his native lands so he can die. Point being I don’t think the plot involves traditional cowboys. Think Dances With Wolves.
True, but still. When one thinks "western hat" their mind doesn't exactly jump to what Christian Bale and the rest of the cast don in the movie. I mean, when one thinks of "western hat", I'd imagine that the hat that Rosamund Pike and her husband wears is what comes to most people's mind:

I'm no expert, but these seem to be fairly accurate.

Or are you saying the creases are too fedora like?
I don't think it's a criticism with me, in fact I was rather fond of the hats that were worn. I just found the creases somewhat ahead of their time. I mean the band on the hat that Rory Cochrane wears is about halfway in size away from going full Indiana Jones...

Which I suppose it may not come as a surprise that the first time after watching Raiders as a child, I called Indiana a "cowboy."

I saw the movie last night. The hat Rosamund Pike wore with the telescope crease was her dead husband's, if you recall. To me all the rest of the hats worn were soft felt hats of the kind worn by most military soldiers on the plains.

I liked the movie a lot. Was surprised & glad to see Stephen Lang even though it was a small part. Recognized the voice of Ben Foster before I recognized him; that gave new meaning to the nod between Christian Bale & Foster (3:10 to Yuma) when Foster first appears on screen. I liked that.

I just saw Kenneth Branagh’s “Murder on the Orient Express,” which was a competent if flawed film but was absolutley beautifully shot, imo. One reason for this was the costuming - there a LOT of nice hats especially in the first half hour or so.

Here’s an interesting piece from Vanity Fair talking with the costume designer. The piece is interesting in itself but there’s also a photo of Poirot’s hat as well as one photo of the train station where you’ll see a few more. These are not very indicative of how well done the costumes were though, nor the hats for sure, but it’s a taste.

And of course the mandatory Johnny Depp in a fedora shot, which is about all I could get out of Google.

I can recommend the film for the costumes and settings. Other aspects are problematic but I still enjoyed it overall.
