Quirky things that people have done 'in the day' that people would gasp at today..

Just writing a Thank You card is unusual today. Whenever I write one I always get the comment that they haven't received one of those in ages.

This was such a great read and brought back a lot of memories.

WOW! the bleach and Lysol baths.

My dad when we were little would give us sips of his beer. To this day I hate the taste of beer and do not drink liquor of any kind.

And we would all pile in the car like sardines too, no seat belts, 1970s and 1980s. And sometimes with the family dogs too, no cages, we'd hold our pets in our laps or sit them on the floor of the car.
And we would play out in the yard with no parents around. And the front of the house too, and we live in the city so there were lots of kids next door to play with.

Me and my brother got a lot of scraped knees and got dirty playing in the dirt and mud too. And when me my brother and sister were little we did have baths together too, it saved my mom time, and helped my mom to be able to look after a baby too. My mom would spank us with a belt too, when ever we got out of line.

Talking on the phone is becoming a quirk.
Which I'm not sure why I mind, because I don't even like talking on the phone. I just dislike that social media has become the default way to communicate. I think it really removes something from the inpersonal experience. And I deactivated my social media because of various reasons, even though I realized... most of my long term friends probably have no other way to contact me.

My wife was a child in a small prairie town, no running water, no bathroom. The bath was in a galvanized tub on Saturday night. She was the youngest and received the privilege of going first....she got the hot and warm water. The youngest boy got the dirty and cold water.

My mother used to send me up to the store to buy her cigarettes -- when I was six years old. She'd give me half a buck and tell me I could keep the change, and I'd walk to the store, swagger up to the counter and ask for a pack of Kents. And then I'd walk back home and hand 'em over.

Nowadays, a mother who let a six year old walk to the store by herself would be up on charges, never mind the ciggies.

I used to do the same, except I got $1.25 to buy a CARTON of Luckies or Camels. AND, with the nickel I had left over I could get a popsicle or bottle (yep. BOTTLE) of pop!

When I was really young my folks had a huge Ford station wagon and there was nothin' more fun than riding around in the 'way-back' and convincing Dad to drive really fast along a curvy road. Me and my friends would laugh our heads off slidin' around and crashin' into each other back there.

On family vacation road trips my mom would cover the entire back of that station wagon with foam rubber and blankets and we'd never stop for the 24+ hours it took for us to drive from Cincinnati OH to my parent's hometown in ND. Us kids would sleep, read, eat all in the comfort of the giant bed in the back of the station wagon. My parents would take turns driving and stop as little as possible. They'd even switch drivers on the highway without stopping.
