I trimmed my Federation IV brim today

I was looking around for something similar a while back, but didn't find too much. Figured I'd share my experience.

After thinking I needed a rounding jack to trim the brim, I kind of have up on the idea. Then I decided to go for it after reading that a rounding jack is total overkill for a simple brim trim.

I wanted the brim 2 1/2" all around instead of the 2 3/4 up front and back—really not wild about the Indy look.

So I turned an old credit card into a sort of rounding jack for a pencil and went for it. It gave me a perfect round line to follow. Honestly, it couldn't have been easier. The felt was super soft to cut. I trimmed the best I could and sanded the rest with 250 grit then finished with 400. Looks factory.

really great job ... and great tool

curiosity ... is your hat a size to big or is the camera putting what looks like a space between your head and the sweat ?

from the pics it looks like the hat is touching your forehead and the back of your head and not the sides

just an observation ... maybe you are a long oval and the hat is reg oval ?

Funny you say that, I had just removed the spacers I had in there before the photo to allow more stretching. But ended up putting spacer only on the sides to make up for the long oval vs oval. I'm def a more narrow oval than the Fed comes from the factory.

So, good observation and 100% right.

That's brilliant!
No need for fancy things.

My grandma drew all her patterns with some thread looped around a pencil and it worked perfectly every time. She was dead on every time and I messed up with my fancy schmansy tools...
If I'm imagining this right, it sound brilliant. Next time I'll give this a shot. Love it!

Is that the Carbon Grey? I've always liked a bound brim, however that symmetrical brim makes that hat look great.
