I'm a 7 3/8 with a long, long oval head. Anyone with something similar knows how our head shape distorts a proper fitting hat eventually. Some times getting "simple" right, is tough. I love these big old plain jane, "farmer's hat" styles. Likely the easiest way to get a good hat to that shape is spend a full day out in a driving rain. They sure aren't Nevada Flat Tops or Montana Peaks. True period cowboy hats were 4"x 4" at best. Even in the real cowboy world open crown hats aren't often seen any more. Once they were the most common hat shape. When everyone was punchy a man wanted others to know he still had a "new" hat and some jingle in his pocket.

Always a real treat for me to build myself a new hat.

This one is a beaver, 5" open crown, 5 3/8" unbound brim, mild flip, latigo hat band with a sterling Horlacher hat concho. It is a tight one and needs some more steam to get it to mold to my head better. Or better yet, for how I like them to fit, just a day in the sun, shovel in hand.

I even have my own version of Call's "Hell Bitch". She's put me through the fence and on the dirt several times early on. Bites like a snake when she isn't it the mood. Just turned 4 but a lot in common with Call's horse But she liked the new hat this morning so we're good today!

Anyone else sporting a hat inspired by Call or McCrae? Let's see them!

Now that is a right nice looking hat and with a super duty function as well!

Here is the "Captain Call" I made for a friend who was working at the Lonesome Dove Reunion here in Ft. Worth last year. You might recognize the two men with him. Both were in "Longmire", and A. Martinez (on left) was in "The Cowboys" with John Wayne as well as many other films.

Great. This thread reminded me I started reading the lonesome dove series years ago but only got thru the first book. Now I just started Comanche moon. 800 pages, the speed I read I will be finished in June.
I would love a full western hat but the closest I can pull off is a crossover or an Australian outback style.

I'm not a fan of rolled fenders & horsehair tassels

So I changed the brim on my Ritch Rand up a bit & went with a beaded hatband.

You have so many nice hats it's hard to pick a favorite, but this one just does it for me. The beaded band looks good on it too.

Thanks DD. I could say the same about you & yours. I'm a fan of Native American geometric patterns in beadwork. The blues & yellow seems to really work with the Silverbelly on this hat, I think.

Not sure what thread or who gave me the idea to go back and watch "Comanche Moon" again, but who ever did, I took their advice. 10 years on I had a whole different take on what I saw and heard.

Wes Studi makes any movie....good. I remembered the actor playing a younger Gus nailed it spot on. Still think he did an impressive job living up to Duvall's younger version. Val Kilmer was right there with the best of them. Not a Doc Holiday this time but still very good.

Captain Call in retrospect did good as well. Much as I liked Call in Lonesome Dove, Comanche Moon gave him more depth I think. Funny how one can be given a whole lot of life in ten years and that experience change one's perspective on characters and story line.

Worth the time to watch it again.

Steve Zahn was the actor who played Gus and he had Duvall's mannerisms and voice inflections down pat. I enjoyed that mini series as well.

Jonny Lee Miller did a rather mediocre job as Call in Dead Man's Walk. Miller's only real claim to fame is that he was once married to Angelina Jolie.

I've never seen the original miniseries all the way through, but I've read the novel numerous times. What strikes me the most is that people who know the characters almost always refer to "Gus," but they refer to his long-time Ranger partner as "Call" or "Captain Call"; I do it myself. Possibly because in the story, Call and Lorena and many of the other characters call Gus by his first name, but only Gus, I think (and maybe Newt's mother, Maggie), addresses Call as "Woodrow."

Or maybe it's that Gus is a more accessible, friendly sort to the reader and viewer, and Call is not.

I've intentionally not read the books. I liked the TV mini Series and the actors so much I have yet to want to "see" the "other charaters" in print. Time for that in the future I hope.

Much as I admired both Gus and Call in the first Series, both are flawed men. For me Gus is easier to like. Call easier to respect. But fact is Call was a real dick...through and through in some ways....just like many of us. Wish I were more like Gus. But I'd suspect my wife and friends would say I am more like Call. And it wouldn't be a compliment. Guess if there was a movie character I admired most from the series it would be Gideon Walker

The books, particularly Lonesome Dove itself, really develop the characters out much more than the movies had time to. If you've seen the movie that many times and have the characters fixed in your mind, you will enjoy the greater depth of the book. The movie stayed pretty true to the book, including a lot of character's lines word-for-word, and it isn't hard at all to hear Woodrow and Gus "speaking" as you read.

They are long books, but if you have the time I think you will enjoy them and that they won't spoil the movie for you at all.
