All You Need to Know About Hat Etiquette

...a good friend of mine and Grammy Award winning song writer Billy Steinberg grew up on his grandfathers vineyards in California and introduced me to an enormous wine community that I had no idea existed ... you think hat people are crazy ?
Boy, you ain't kiddin'. My sister-in-law and her husband are low-level wine enthusiasts (i.e., they can't afford the truly high-end wines, but they know far too much about Napa Valley and often attend tastings at local wineries in Orange County, California), and they and the other winos in their circle of family and friends can go on and on discussing the merits of this wine versus that wine and getting nods of approval when they reveal the deal they got on a bottle of Two-Buck Chuck (which, in their vernacular, does not strictly refer to a bottle of Charles Shaw). Sometimes I'm sure that I now know how other people feel when my friends and I start talking about movies. :D

I’m curious, what are the views of FL members on hat etiquette? When is the proper time to remove your hat? Should you remove it when entering a building or can you leave it on in common areas of a building such as hallways, foyers and elevators, grocery stores or malls? I often see people wearing ball caps everywhere even eating in restaurants, theaters and stores.

ps... I realize you are a newer member and I do not mean to be sassy. It is a subject that often divides the audience here into armed camps. Which isn't to say that the responses are not interesting to read.

In general, posing a question to Google with the words "the fedora lounge" is a good way to draw up old threads that you would not find searching the site internally.

I usually keep my hat on when in a public space, except for when eating in a restaurant (though not in a diner) or if I'm in an religious space such as a church or temple. If I'm in a museum it depends, usually if it is a art museum then it comes off.

I always take off my hat when entering a private space, such as someones home.

The people here on the Lounge are some of the nicest you'll ever meet. That said, all of us new people starting new threads when others already exist is not going to make you popular. No harm done and no one will hold a grudge. The Lounge's search functions are not always the best. I prefer the use Google and get into the Lounge that way:

This way you can use the better search features of Google. The topic of hat etiquette is well-plowed ground. The FL has been around long enough that you can pretty much assume that such common topics already have a thread.

No worries. At least you weren't like me and posted a live eBay auction of a hat that a fellow Lounger was after....the Lounge has its own etiquette. Stick around and you'll pick things up in no time.

I’ll definitely keep the google search engine in mind for cutting down multiple topics.

Pretty much what Alan said. You will see everything from following the old standard hat etiquette to doing whatever you darn well please. I think most fall somewhere in the middle. It is definitely entertaining reading.
Thanks I feel like I fall in the middle.

No offense taken and I didn’t think your response was “sassy”. Even if I did my skin is thick. :) I’m new here so I need to continue my learning curve. After this reply the moderators/bartenders can feel free to close this much covered topic. Thanks for the replies everyone.

People that like to argue will always be able to find something to argue about. Any popular subject will be discussed several times and why not, it's my understanding that a forum is for discussions. It seems there is a disagreement about whether hat etiquette should be discussed because it might cause a disagreement, is that about it ?

As a newer member, I always suggest you put in a little time reading through some of the threads featured in the "Links to Important Hat Forums" section. Not only will you get a sense of how this place works, you will get a good background in history and things that have been covered in discussions. There is nothing to say you can't bring something new to the table. Everybody has their own insight.

No, it's just a subject which has been trod over many times by many folks on the forum. It does make for some interesting discussion, and since we're all pretty civil around here, this particular one has gotten lively, but not out of hand.

I only suggest that, if you want to comment on it, that the previous thread be used instead of bringing up a new one.

No, I believe the issue is with multiple threads, but that has already been taken care of by our bartenders.

I went to Birdland in NYC last week to hear Lucky Peterson. Great show, and a great time.

The Birdland Jazz club looks exactly like all those small dinner clubs you see in movies from the 1940s and 50s - small tables for two with a candle, and everyone right up close to the stage. The bar is in the back.

Now I am old school, and if I am seated at a bar or lunch counter, (or shooting pool) I keep my hat on.

If I'm at a table, it's hats off, and I did so here. But what surprised me is a number of men (I counted five) who kept their hats on while seated at tables. Are they ignorant of the rules of etiquette, or don't they care, or have things changed?

Many times, in restaurants, I've seen guys at tables with their hats on. I have wanted to politely approach them and remind them that "a gentleman doffs his hat when seated at a table." But the possibility of an "off-the-menu" knuckle sandwich has so far deterred me.

Quite a few pages here for just such a discussion.
