Growing up in the country we always had several dogs. In the wintertime they lived under the front porch. Late one fall a red hound showed up out of nowhere. He stayed the winter & it was a bad one. Come early Spring my grandpa & I where high on a hill overlooking land owned by the RR all the way to the river. I happened to look out & spotted the red hound about 3/4 mile out trotting away from us. I asked my grandpa where he supposed the dog was going? He answered that winter was over & the red hound was continuing his journey home. There was no way that dog could hear us from that far out, but at that very moment he stopped & turned to look back at us for a couple of minutes. Then he turned to continue his journey & we never saw him again.

We were looking at the Sioux City Iowa newspaper one Sunday and someone north of Sioux City in Southeast South Dakota had Lab/Border Collie pups to give away. So we drove about 70 minutes up there to the farm where she was. She was the last pup. No one wanted her because she didn't look like a Border Collie, is what the owner told us. I was hoping myself to get a BC cause we had one on the farm when I was a kid. So anyway we felt sorry for her because no one wanted her, so we took her home and she turned out to be more than we expected. So she did come to us as you said.

I had a riding lawn mower that we put hand controls on so I could transfer from my wheelchair onto the mower and mow the acreage we were living on at the time. While I mowed I would tow my Wheelchair to a central location in case the mower broke down or something. Towing the chair behind while I mowed didn't work well. Anyway I had to leave the Wheelchair under a shade tree, because Sam (her name) would lay by that chair no matter what. If I left it in the sun she would have laid by it until she melted away. She was extremely loyal and protective.

Don’t be sorry...not a rant...thank you for sharing...i’m lookin at a dog that laid and waited a good long time on me too, when i couldn’t do. Her name is Faith. I just wish i could be as good a person as she is a dog.
PS: She’s wearing a 7x Clear Beaver Last Drop cause she’s worth it!!! Not photogenic.

When that red hound showed up at our place he hadn't been around people for a while; maybe not at all. He was all skin & bones. One of the pads on a paw was badly cut & infected. I probably spent a couple of hrs pulling ticks off him. Come Spring he was rested & in good shape. I have always wondered where his journey took him.

When I was a kid my uncle had a boxer named Red. When my uncle got cancer, Red seemed to know. As my uncle got weaker, Red became much more gentle with him. My uncle was in and out of the hospital, but Red always waited for his return, running to meet him at the car. On the last visit to the hospital my uncle died. On that very day Red ran away. We all believe somehow Red knew is owner would not return this time.
