@casechopper that's their Octagon leather, right? And if so what do you think of it? How has it aged and how does it compare against the other hides in your extensive collection? Reason I ask is I'm waiting on s comet right now. Thanks in advance.

Anyone else with experience of Octagon do feel free to pitch in too. Cheers

It is the Ocatagon brown competition weight leather. It's very stiff and heavy which for this style of jacket makes sense. The finish wears to a light tan where heavily worn. The color is a reddish/brown. I like it a lot. As it ages more I expect it to lighten in color more.

That sounds very good colour wise but has me now wondering if there are two types of Octagon, i.e. a mid and a comp weight. Or whether this leather used to be heavier than it is now. Guess I will be finding out in the not too distant future. Cheers

What? I heard it was midweight! The rest of your description sounds good but I have to hope it's not as substantial as you say since I don't get along well with heavyweight jackets. Oh well, if it is heavier than expected, at least this is a short one!

Well, one that I had was definitely heavier than what I would say is a mid-weight hide. It was very close to Comp. weight and only marginally more pliable. Truth be told, that was a brand new jacket so I don't know if it gets broken in quicker but regardless, Vanson is a motorcycle apparel company so what they consider a mid-weight hide is still something most other makers wouldn't dream of using.

It was a heavy-weight jacket any way you look at it. :)

Hmm.. so perhaps this jacket will be the making of me lol. If it isn't then expect it to arrive at a classifieds near you. And I think it will be your size @Monitor! You are a 40 I believe..

The rest of it is LL Bean too, except for the Stetson and the Swedish winter army boots made by Tretorn in the mid 1960s.

Have a great Thursday,

That’s a beautiful coat! I especially love the slash pockets.

Thanks A1. As you can sort of see from the photos the slanted pockets are only attached on their upper halves and serve as the flaps for patch pockets underneath of them.

This coat gets most of it's wear, sans liner, in the spring and fall when I'm out hopping about looking for mushrooms in the woodlands.

Thanks,
Michael

It’s still February, but North Carolina temperatures are hovering in the high seventies and low eighties. Amazing that a month ago we were setting record lows.

Anyhow, nowadays I’m posting over in the “What Thin T-shirt Y’all Wearing Today?” thread.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't vansons sizing come in slightly small? I've checked a few used listings and they seem smaller across the chest

So Mr. Buzzard, your question on Vanson sizing is likely worth it's own thread. "It's complicated" is a good short answer. Certainly, it depends greatly on the model you are considering.

I have on my back as I type this a 1980 Vanson Enfield that is a tag size 42. Fits like a dream on my 6'1" / 195 lb body.

That said my Size 46 Mark II Cobra (more of a true Motorcycle style, no removable pads in in) is broad in the shoulders, short on torso length, long in back length, and a general "fit" mess but I love it so much that I would never want to part ways with it.

Then I owned for a year or so a Vanson Model "A" in a 44, it was boxy, too long in the back, too wide across the shoulders, but sleeve length and waist were good.

So I guess I'm comparing Horses to Mules, and Sheep to Turkeys, but it's the best I can do right now. My cold is getting the best of me. Off to bed, to hopefully sleep this off. Sorry if I made no sense.
