Greetings Bill et al:
WOW Bill...thats a really cool hat!! And looks to be pretty darn old. You just gotta love those less than $100 Borsalino deals!! Like Alan said “lived” in the box. That liner crest looks very unusual to me. The image is a bit blurry. Maybe you could post some clearer ones if you have a chance. Dying to see it. I’m thinking you may have a unicorn right there. Good get.
Be well. Bowen

Ha! I think you're right! Felt for year 10, yeah that's the ticket! I actually have a custom on order for her, but I'm not sure it will be ready in time. :(
Ha.. good!! Even better! Get another one for her..you know a temp..then switch it out for her “real” one. That way you got another. We guys gotta stick together ya know!!

This just arrived and I feel sick. When I opened the package I found the brim had been cut during packaging. It's a very very clean cut like with a razor blade/box cutter etc. The brim is 3" and the cut goes in 1/2".

The good news is the seller responded right away and refunded the $60 plus $7.60 shipping.

So do I try to add a binding? That would be a very wide binding to cover the cut. Or have it cut down to 2 1/2"? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Oh man Bill it makes me ill just seeing that. So sorry, so sad, such an unusual find. I know i’d be brainstorming how to somehow repair that if for no other reason then just to look at it. There’s gotta be a glue hidden microstitch solution. Good luck with it. Got me thinkin.

If you don't mind spending some money and waiting a little bit for a result, I would contact Bob Jessee at Black Sheep Hat Works. Removing the creasing and restoring the brim flange from a lightweight hat that spent 60 years folded into a box is not a simple task. Having it professionally restored and rehabilitated would be worthwhile for an unworn time capsule hat like this one. 2 1/4 to 2 1/2" brim should be enough to create something nice with... and Bob is the best.

Since the seller refunded all the money; this has turned into a free project hat. So putting some money into it is not a problem.

My thoughts right now are:
1) have the 3” brim trimmed down by 1/4”
2) that would still leave a 1/4” cut
3) have the brim bound to cover the cut
4) that way I keep a wider brim at 2 3/4”

Sounds like a great plan to me!

I think this idea would be your best use of this hat. Maybe a wide binding and a matching new ribbon treatment? Kind of an Italian Whippet look? I agree with Alan about sending it to BSHW, or maybe our @bond

Based on photos, I doubt Capone had a noggin that small. I was thinking hoping it would be a size that would fit me.
I bet you could find one just like it for about $750 cheaper. You could make your own fake COA saying it was Capone's if you like. Heck, you could even say it was Marvin the Martian or Bigfoot's hat if you wanted. :D
