1860 hat blocks

My accountant has a client who sells antiques who has several hat blocks......most of much he says are from 1860.

Do you think this block is really that old?

I have no deisre for hat blocks......but I was amazed that he gets $500-$750 for these from people who use them as decorator items. That seems outragous to me......or is that what they are worth?

I haven't paid over $50 for a block. Although, some auctions do go into the $120 range. I have never seen one in the range you mentioned.

Here's few pics I saw of a block that was from the 30's

All but one of the blocks I own have this type of bottom. I even recall Joe Jr.'s blocks having this type of bottom.

1960, perhaps. Certainly not 1860. I've done research into 19th C. clothing styles for my writing, and that crown doesn't match anything I've seen from that period. I'm pretty sure that style of teardrop crown is a 20th C. design.

The prices seems mighty high, too.

Gentlemen, this is NOT an 1860 block, but I would bet it is a model "1860" designated by the manufacturer. It looks like a "La Mode" block that yes, does go for $500-700.
Pyroxene, you are looking at ebay prices, and for that you usually get smaller blocks. Some of those $125 bids have been mine and i have lost! Still looking for shaped blocks so any hints out there would be appreciated.

Those blocks are missing the top piece. The, a mirror image of the top bash, but the male counterpart. Can't recall what they call the things. It is an odd name. Anyone remember? Fedora
