The question of "remaking" a song is quite different when applied to the rock era as opposed to the 1920s, '30s, '40s, and early '50s.

Songs in those earlier years were not nearly as a strongly associated with a particular performer ...

And few of those songs were written by the performers who had the hits with them.

So a "remake" of a Bob Dylan or Beatles song is one thing; a "remake" of a Cole Porter standard is quite another. ...

Very true, and it seems to me that the best songs of earlier years are musically and (especially with someone like Cole Porter) lyrically strong enough on their own that they can shine through generations of new interpretations. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I came of age in the sixties and am happy to have done so, and there are a lot of fine rock songs I'm deeply fond of. But--with some exceptions of course--on the whole their quality seems to depend more on the performance than with earlier music.

"Can't Take My Eyes Of You", written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio, was a 1967 single by Frankie Valli.

'Till There Was You" is a song written by Meredith Willson for his 1957 musical play The Music Man.

The Beatles'
version was included on their albums With The Beatles (UK release, 1963) and Meet The Beatles! (US release, 1964). The song was the only Broadway tune that The Beatles ever recorded.

This one is by Paul McCartney

In my Italian class, I was assigned to pick a song to do a project on from a sadly limited list of rather mediocre Italian pop music.
I grudgingly picked this one.

However, when I was doing my research, I stumbled across this gem, which is the original.
