Smooth to me would be when a gentleman either says something complimentary or acts in a chivalrous way, but all of it is in an unaffected manner. It should be genuine and sincere, otherwise it's the wrong kind of "smooth."

I agree with the lip stain idea. I too enjoy wearing red lipstick, but for interviews or other professional settings I like to tone it down by applying lightly and then blotting to create a stain look. A hint of red gives the same impression without looking overpowering.
I've just started using Bobbi Brown lipstick in Red Carpet. It's a really lovely, bright red. Doesn't stay on too long, but the texture is wonderful and has a nice matte finish.
I don't dress in full vintage yet. My typical look is reddish lips and mascara, with a blouse and around knee-length skirt (silk Enwrapture Vintage skirts are the best!)
