What cigar (or pipe) did you smoke today?

Tonight is "cigar night" and I intend to head over to the Beverley Cigar Store and savor a Churchill...

    History Channel Gone Wrong

No such deal ever existed, and from the get go "cable" television was always profit driven (just like the BBC). As the number of networks expanded the amount of available programing was unable to keep pace, and the networks were forced to broaden the scope of the kinds of programs they...

    Golden Era Police

    History Channel Gone Wrong

Television is all about entertainment, not education (a word we don't even use). Programming, because it is expensive, has to be entertaining to hold an audience. If they can take something away from the program -- an idea, a concept, or a fact -- so much the better. If you want merely to be...

    Golden Era Police

I may be in error, but I am given to understand that when the long coat is worn by NYPD officers their duty side arm is carried in a pocket holster to facilitate ease of access.

    Same with port.

When do you break the Panama hat out for the 1st time?

As a believer in an orderly society I carry a pistol year round and only wear panamas after May 15th, and then only on weekends. Beginning with the Memorial Day weekend I wear panamas with linen and seersucker suits. Otherwise, like tealseal, it's light coloured felt hats.

    Show us your Guns!

Walther now has a factory in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and via their on-line store have a really spectacular, two-volume book set on the history of the company and it's products.

    Show us your Guns!

I spoke to a friend who is something of a Walther expert, and he suggested that these guns were made up during the war from existing stocks of pre-war parts. He didn't attach much credence to the "concentration camp" story, and said that (subject to more research) he believes that they were...

    Vintage Concealed Weapons

Actually, bolos carry pretty well in a shoulder holster, and the Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu used to keep one up his sleeve. Not sure what sort of holster he had, but it musta been pretty damn clever.

    Waxed Barbour jackets

I think it boils down to the fact that there are two kinds of Barbour owners, and Barbour makes jackets for both; those who view the Barbour as a strictly utilitarian object (like the Land Rover Defender, or a Labrador retriever) and those who see them as a fashion/status statement (like the...

    Waxed Barbour jackets

In the twenty two years I lived in Ireland before moving to the USA, I can only remember having a Barbour re-waxed once. And I wore mine almost every day (rains a lot over there). What do you guys do, over here, that would require waxing a Barbour even once a year?

    Waxed Barbour jackets

Where I come from Barbours are green (although some ladies wear blue or brown) and one is judged by the age of their Barbour and the length of the drive leading up to their house. That said, I don't recall lint being a problem. Dog, cat, and horse hair tended to stick to the jacket, but only...

    Help with silver cocktail shaker

Those are the marks used on silver plate items manufactured by Walker and Hall from about 1920 until (approximately) 1960. Hope that helps. For what it's worth W&H was considered a "high class" silversmith, and had outlets in London and other major cities in the UK. My advice would be to clean...

    Help with silver cocktail shaker

I'd go with a clear liquid dip, the sort usually used for flatware or jewelry, before I'd apply an abrasive polish as this will do the least damage to the finish. You can apply it with a wad of cotton, let it sit for the recommended time, then rinse it off per the directions on the packaging.

    Seltzer Siphons?

If you are shopping for a siphon, check that the rubber seals haven't perished. Mine dates from 1934 (according to the hallmarks) and uses ordinary CO2 cartridges. Excellent reproductions are available from Prairie Moon (www.prairiemoon.biz) for around a hundred bucks.

    Help with silver cocktail shaker

A.C. Lyles is right; let the lid soak in really hot water and it should loosen right up. If you think the shaker is silver (and if it is, lucky you!) it will be so marked either on the bottom (look for the word 'sterling' if it was made in the USA) or along the rim of the shaker. The best way to...
