Vintage straws as viable as vintage felts?

I've been gunshy about buying vintage straws. I just figured they don't age as well, and I'll end up disappointed. But is this just ignorance, and if you know what to look for there are bargains to be found with some confidence? Where are the "sweet spots" in vintage straws? Thanks!

What is a Panama "reinforced brim edge"?

I often see this on ebay and on online sites. The ad text says the edge of the brim is reinforced - but not how. Does it mean turned under and sewn, or backwoven, or something else entirely, or nothing at all? Thanks!

    Machine blocked panamas

If you find a machine-blocked panama you like, is there any disadvantage to that vs having a hand block or an open block and doing it yourself?

    Khaki Akubra?

Akubra is one main producer I have yet to sample, and I see a color hole in my collection - a hat that goes very well with khaki-colored clothes. Optimally, I could kill two birds with one stone, but I seek hands-on knowledge. I can't tell online about all these fawns, etc Akubra offers. My...

Whippet "factory" standard crown and brim shapes?

I've dug out several nice Whippet pics from FL. But I'm trying to determine what the "factory" crown was - center dent, dent with front pinch, teardrop? I've seen all these on FL... Also, I see in a lot of pics that the rear bound edge is turned up. Not a pencil roll exactly, just 45-90 degree...

    It's Kentucky Derby weekend!

I'm wearing my derby from now through the weekend in honor of the Kentucky Derby. If you like a special reason to wear your derby, here's a good one! Anybody interested in trying to create a "calendar" of appropriate days / weeks to wear certain types of hats? I don't really have the hat...

    Bleeding felt dye - help!

I have fur felt hats (dark brown and black, and maybe others) that bleed dye when they get wet. I want to wear them in the rain. I want them to not dye whatever they touch when they are wet:mad: They also stain the hatband ribbon:mad: At first I thought it was just one cheap one, but now I see...

    New improved Stetson felt?

Reading up on The Boss of the Plains, I came across this web site (thanks Daniel Jones!) with this text: "We now have genuine Stetson Boss of the Plains. Stetson makes the hats exclusively for us that we finish block to the original 4" B.O.P. form. ...these hats are made of the new improved...

    New 50's Moss Resistol

From OFAS. I needed (OK, wanted) a hat in this color, and I really liked this one. 3 1/2" brim, 5 1/4" crown as now blocked. I like the ribbon. I don't like how I look in a cattleman-type crown with the high wide front. Suggestions on alternate crown and brim shapes for a hat of these...

First vintage hat...I hope (Stetson derby)

Well, I have old hats, but I hope this is a nice old hat:) Snagged it today, pics are from the listing. And then I wondered "could it be wool" Can anyone tell me anything about it? Thanks!

    The Conversion Corral

Cowboy hat conversions I've been playing with some ebay buys as I get up the "hat learning curve". Old cowboy hats are pretty easy to find in larger sizes, and pretty cheap. I cut all the brims down from 3 1/2 or 4 inches to 2 3/4 or 2 7/8. Conversion #1 is a light taupe / fawn Stetson 3X. It...

    Trip to Resistol/Stetson Factory Store

I live in the Dallas area, so I thought it would be interesting to visit, although I wasn't expecting much. I went earlier this week with my son. We're both interested in wearing hats, and nicer ones than the gimme caps and flop hats etc we were used to. The store is in old downtown Garland...

Newbie question: How is crown height measured?

My first post - I've learned a lot by lurking and searching the past weeks, thanks for the collective contributions to FL. Sometimes hats with shallow crowns hit the top of my head. My Miller Stetson ("Flint") just touches. I'm trying to figure out how crown height is measured (as stated in...
