Three is a good start and a 20 is usually a fine hat. Welcome to the world of hats.... but be warned. Hats are like potato chips, around here. You can't have just one... or two... or only three.
"While I tried to search into the history of the hat I began to realize that there is little information I can find on the Willard Hat Co."
Welcome to hat collecting. Trying to pin down info on hats is as hard as researching the ancient Germanic peoples. We know they existed, we have evidence...
Yeah size sure does matter. Not long ago I bought a Stetson for $80 Buy-It-Now that the seller mislabeled on size. It was sold as a small to medium hat but ended up as a 7-3/8. I threw it back on ebay correctly labeled and got $200 for it! Sheese.
Yes, as I understood it, it was because of the stuff they spray the hats with. Sometimes the brushes get a bit of color on them and if you use a dark brush on a light hat, a darker shading can be transferred to the hat. If you do dark brushes only on dark hats and light brushes on light hats you...
This is a FACT of life. No matter what, you'll never know the comfort and fit of any hat until it is sitting on your head. "Sizes" are just a suggestion, a starting point from where to figure the best hat fit.
I have also been intrigued that at one time Stetson even numbered its bow styles! I don't imagine we will ever get a handle on that because it seems only the early 1900s hats have a bow note and many seem to be bowlers.
SHOCKING that this Stetson that is in such "good condition" and "ready to ship" has been put on ebay several times already without a single bid...

And only for $75 bucks even though it is missing...
Here is what I've gathered buying and selling fedoras on US ebay: (These general comments pertain to pre 1965 American fedoras) Seems to me that in the USA, Stetson rules. You have a good Stetson and it'll always get more $$ than any other brand. Borsos still fetch a pretty good price on US...
I have two reactions. It is an uncommon one and all the cool factor is in the inside. But, on the other hand, it is a pretty boring looking exterior! LOL Still, very nice piece. Size will also determine its worth. What size is it? What do the inventory stickers look like? Any lot numbers stamped...
I agree especially if you are buying without the intent of selling it and trying to get the $$ back out of it.
I'm of two minds with ebay buys. On one hand, I hate to pay a top dollar knowing I could likely never sell it and recoup my $$. On the other hand, sometimes a hat just comes up that...
