A Guide to Elegance by Genevieve Antoine Dariaux

I'm definitely going to buy this book! If anyone has any more recommendations for vintage etiquette books do list them! I have the Art of Being a Well Dressed Wife by Anne Fogarty (reprint) and The Modern & Complete book of Etiquette by Hallie Erminie Rives (1939), I'd love to have a collection.

    Golden Era Women's Names

My mothers name is Michelle and she would disagree with you on that point! She and my dad went on to give my siblings and I extra-unusual names as a protest against the popularity of both of theirs lol Love all these old names, my Nana's are Alma (married to Reginald) and Margery (married to...

Show us your vintage-vintage inspired Engagement Ring!

All of your rings are so beautiful! My (now) fiancé proposed while we were travelling through the USA with this absolutely gorgeous black opal set with diamonds in silver and gold.. He designed it himself and kept it hidden from me for 6 months! (I hope these work and that they're not...

    Best beauty decision you've made?

It was!!!!! So bad. But yeah, at the time it was totally "hot" :eusa_doh:... I'm actually surprised I got into that hairstyle seeing as I dislike the 80's so very very much haha.

Help a gal out - how can I "Vintage-ify" this dress?

Thanks ladies! :o Wahine - I'm slightly obsessed with the double skirt now.. I'm thinking a pencil skirt or even shorts with a full skirt over the top, perfection!

    Show us what you've made!

I posted this on the thread I started looking for help for something to wear to an "old hollywood glamour" themed party, but I figured it sort of belongs here too since I ended up making something myself! I made a franken-pattern out of the same one I used for the other dress I posted here...

Help a gal out - how can I "Vintage-ify" this dress?

So the party was last night, and my dress was a hit! I came 3rd in a best dressed competition after two guys who wore costumes.. it was "cheer" based and I don't really know that many people at my workplace haha. Here's what I ended up with, like I said it is totally different to what I...

    Show us your hair do's....

Alice - Thank you!! I tend to use sponge rollers the most.. I still haven't really got the hang of pin curls and I just find that the sponge curls stay in longer for me. Also they are about a million times faster to do! The only downside I'm finding is that the rollers are a bit tough on my...

    Nothing but Seamed Stockings

I'm bumping up this thread with a question, hopefully someone can help! I am sorting out my accessories to wear with a 1950's-style dark blue (not quite navy) lace full-skirted 3/4 length dress for evening... I just wanted to ask about the colour of stockings. Now I would love to wear some...

Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

*shudder* I work in the Melbourne CBD and I see this constantly. I used to work for a large fashion retailer in Bourke St Mall and my golly, the amount of ladies I saw out for a day of shopping with their hair done up all lovely (well.. you know), wearing sparkly, tiny skirts.. and ugg boots...

Lovely lazy hair there :) I got the two snoods I ordered the other day, I wore my red one today over coconut-oil soaked hair - they make a great cover up for treatments! I've been looking at lots of photos of lovely snood-wearing ladies and I'm excited to try different fringe...

I completely agree Miss Slapstick, everyone seems so reluctant to put in any amount of extra effort (or rather, they don't want to look like they've put in any effort). It's a shame really! Oh Wahine, thank you! :o They're really super easy hairstyles, I swear!!

The best face powder in the world!

I love the pressed powder by Illamasqua. It gives really decent, medium coverage, is perfectly matte and smells lovely. It's also one of the only powders (and foundations in general) that don't make the dry skin around my nose look horribly flakey.

    Best beauty decision you've made?

Definitely filling in my eyebrows!! Looking back at old photos I cringe because it looks like I don't have any at all. Also I am SO glad I grew out of that whole scene/emo phase.. I was just looking at old photos of myself in this time and good golly, that was NOT a good look. Why did I have a...

GHT - wowza! I can see why her hair would have it's own fan club.. sign me up! Also that dress is fabulous, so summery and gorgeous, nice work both of you! I recently made this rather plain sun dress out of a basic 90's pattern I had lying around. I modified it a bit to make it look a little...

Miss Slapstick you look like a doll! Beautiful :) Everyones hair is ah-mazing, I've just read through hundreds of pages and there is so much great inspiration. Here's a few of my recent hairstyles, I'm pretty new to it all and I'm trying desperately hard to not be lazy and just set it...
