Sarge, got another recommendation for you. If you want to have the brim trimmed take it to Schatzlein Saddle on Lake Street. They just did one for me today for $5. Took a whole inch off. The tool he uses takes off 1/4 in at a time.

That's because they are plastic, at least the ones the OP mentioned. Polypropylene to be exact . The better option is one of Akubra's natural hemp models like the Balmoral, Reef or Range.
Take a look at the Akubra Squatter, Woomera and Sombero. The last two are way over 2 3/4 inch but have 6in open crowns. Also look at the Akubra Adventurer, but only the one David Morgan imports into the US. The Australian market one is not the same.

Brian- Love that Woomera. Did you trim the brim when you put the curl in it? I have only ever seen them with the deep cattleman crease and the upswept brim. Yours gives that hat a whole new dimension. Very nice.
