    Cognac - where to begin?

I heartily second the comments of LordBest and John in Covina...especially John's comment about Germain Robin. The heartburn comment is so true; my first experience with cognac was at a dinner party. One gentleman decided to attempt to toast everyone else under the table. Thought I was going...

    Blended vs. Single Malt

After educating my palate to single malts, blends just seem very bland to me. My understanding is that blends were originally designed to allow large distributors to achieve a "repeatable" taste back in the day where scotch distilleries were small and their output couldn't meet the demand...

    The Recession and Layoffs Thread

Lots of sheep out there who believe whatever the media tell them. Seems to me we are quickly wiping out the middle class. The wave of foreclosures in the coming months may do more to accelerate that.

Famous folk today who sport a fedora?

The trilby moniker is correct, but if I recall correctly, they are also referred to as "stingy brim" fedoras as well. There might be something regarding material or patterns that further defines the trilby. Someone here can probably clarify.

    Pipes

I have a Calabash, a couple of bent-stem briars, and a Kirsten. I've been looking for a good Meerschaum, but can't seem to find the right one. I've always thought a Kirsten was a little funky until I looked at its history. A Boeing engineer was told he would kill himself if he kept smoking...

What do you use to shave?

To clear up some technique issues: If you have a synthetic handle on your brush, drying it upside down is probably not an issue. In extremely humid areas, you may be concerned about mildew in the "knot" of the brush. I've never heard of anyone having a problem. On the other hand, if you have...

Bladerunner was actually set in Seattle

I think the photo you are looking for is the Denny regrade. I couldn't find it either. Being a native of Seattle, you learn to not let the rain impede your activities. Properly explored, there are many great places to discover. They may not be as condensed as SF, but they are there.

    Christmas Food Traditions!

The great Norwegian tradition continues! My grandparents always pushed that one....not a big fan myself. Stuffed shells on Christmas eve was always my parent's tradition and prime rib on Christmas day. Not very Norwegian or Scottish, I must say.
