This past year has seen a hat explosion in Tokyo. You can't find a fashionable clothing store that does not have fedora style hats displayed. Again, most are small brim types, made of cloth, and a few wool felts can be seen here and there. And it goes without saying that these hats are appearing...
If the fedora style is associated with a front pinch, then we have a few clues from old photos.
The "Stetson Hats" book has photos of Sears catalog hat pages. The catalog from the 1920s has only side pinches while the 1938-39 catalog has mostly front pinches. So judging from this, front pinches...
Here's a recently discovered old newspaper photo from West Virginia around 1900. According to the accompanying article one of my ancestors is in this group (I hope he wasn't the one responsible for making sure the telegraph poles were straight).
Yeah, sweat will be a big problem since it won't be hidden and I do sweat a lot. I may just wear a bandana underneath for absorbing the sweat. There's just enough room for that.
I think a thin ribbon would look good, but leaving it naked makes me feel like I'm making some kind of rebellious...
The absence of ribbon shows off the crown's height better, too. BTW this was a fedora style Panama when I first bought it a few years ago, but it couldn't compete with my other fedoras. I restored it to its original shape and after I rolled it and packed it away, it decided to become an Optimo...
Here ya go. First, the panama on my head last summer:
And here it is today, naked in the December morning sun:
I confess the Panama is not my first choice in head gear, and I'm more likely to go out with a felt hat even in the summer. But a natural, care free travel hat that I can roll...
I've only worn my Panama hat a few times because that black ribbon never seems to go with anything I would wear in the hot weather, which is decidedly casual. It always had a jarring effect (in my eyes).
A while back I decided to reblock the Panama and removed the black band -- and the sweat...
I've only got one cap. bought it in the early 80s when I was in college. It's a black Greek Fisherman's cap. Hey, somebody just snickered; okay, I admit I'm not Greek, and not a fisherman. At least the cap was made in Greece. I bought it at a Greek restaurant where the owner wanted to hire me as...
Here's a follow up to my Akubra Arena purchase. It only stayed in its untouched form for about 10 minutes! I took a quick photo on the veranda for a historical record. Unfortunately the one feature I don't yet understand on my camera is "auto" :) and the photo turned out very small!
It was...
I just ordered a black Akubra Arena from Hats Direct (within the last 24 hours). It's supposed to be the most straight sided among their cowboy hats and is a traditional America style.
I intend to rebash it, trim the brim to 3 or 3 1/4 inches, put on a black 1 1/8 inch grosgrain ribbon to make...
They actually did use a modified military slouch type hat on another character in the movie.
If you look closely you can see the holes in the crown and brim where the hardware once was. I assume that is the explanation for the holes since they correspond.
I've seriously considered...
I've always loved that hat (the one that first appears in the scene where he is loading tusks into the train car).
I think the Akubra Colly or Territory would come very close (you would need to supply the puggaree). Baron Hats has produced a hat that is supposedly identical to this...
