Paint for Leather
Tony, I really don't have any recommendations for any particular brand of paint.
I do agree with you that one should buy a premium high pigment brand.
My leather prep work was simple, I left out the sandpaper step and just deglazed the area I was going to paint with some...
Leather types
I've never had any issues with acrylic paint on smooth leathers: horsehide, goat skin, or cowhide. Especially if the surface is prepped as Maj. Nick recommended. In my experience, the surface of inexpensive lambskin flakes and peels from simple wear, whether or not there's paint...

Here's a link to my thread about painted jackets.
I have a lot of experience with painted jackets, both as a painter and as a collector of painted jackets. I...
I have goatskin jackets that are from the 60's, mostly US Navy G-1s, I have A-2s from Cooper, Protec, US Authentic, and Avirex. I recommend you just wear your goat jacket, in my opinion, it doesn't need any conditioner, honest wear will give it a great patina.
I've had many knits on A-2s replaced. Unless you get exact color replacements, it's best to replace both waistband and cuffs. For a Cooper, you don't really need to buy expensive replacement knits since Cooper OEM knits were not the highest grade anyway. (ps - my Cooper and Avirex knits have...
The jackets and costumes looked great. Maybe on a big screen the aerial scenes will look more 'realistic', but on a computer screen the aerial stuff looked too much like a video game. With that said, I'm still looking forward to seeing the movie in a 3D theatre :D
I don't know if you're looking for an original or a reproduction.
If you want an original, good luck, if you can even find one, it'll probably cost you a couple hundred dollars or more.
There are several patch painters on the forum and the VLJ Forum who can paint this patch for you...
Yikes ! Too late now :eusa_doh:
Actually, I wanted an F-86, when I think of jet fighter vs jet fighter over the skies of Korea, it was the legenday Sabres vs. Migs duels. :fencing:
I love patched and painted leather jackets :D With that being said, I also own over 50 jackets, both A-2s and G-1s, and I 'usually' only patch or paint my second tier jackets, my Aeros, Eastmans and Real McCoys I leave....exception might be a personalized name tape. I do have Aeros, ELCs, and...
Photo Editing programs
Designing jacket art is part of the process, as much as painting techniques.
The photo editing software I've been using is a 6 or 7 year old copy of Photoshop Elements I bought at a flea market. I've been told this is a 'lite' version of Photoshop for guys like me who...
The completed jacket was delivered by the artist.

About a month ago, I dropped off one of my A-2s for a Marilyn Monroe paint job with a local artist who painted the Romain Hugault inspired jacket for me.
I incorporated the 5th AF patch and an F-86 Sabre in the design.
I was looking for a clear photo of Marilyn in a sheath dress, but after...
Aloha cowboy design
About a month ago, I contacted Charles R. Taylor, who's an aviation artist. I asked if he'd take a jacket painting commission. To my delight he said that was an area he'd planned on entering. He told me he liked doing pin-ups and airplanes or whatever else I wanted on the...
You did a neat period looking paint job.
I'm glad you were able to re-post pics of the jacket you painted. hopefully the photosite you're using won't delete it again.
Thanks ! GREAT site :eusa_clap...I've been to that link and have been doing some research on many of the jackets pictured and the stories behind them and posting about them on a blog about my favorite subject...painted flight jackets. :eusa_doh:

Romain Hugault Inspired Jacket Art
I picked up my Romain Hugault inspired A-2 jacket today and it’s a doozy. The artist did a fantastic job on it. This project started when someone posted a link to Romain Hugault’s blog on the VLJ Forum...
Antiquing paint job
I was waiting for an artist to jump in with his response before giving mine.
I commissioned an A-2 with a pre-aged look to copy the original jacket from WW2. The artist did a brilliant job getting that look. Like you, he normally works with acrylics on leather. He tried...
New blog a-2 painted flight jackets
Currently I have 2 jacket painting commissions in progress and a third one in the design stage. The first one is based on images from Romain Hugault's blog. :eusa_clap He's a French illustrator who does art work for aviation themed graphic novels. I saw his...
