Best Shampoo for Redheads?

Im a newly dyed red (think Joan Holloway off Mad Men) and need to keep the color as vibrant and fresh as I can.

One hairdresser has suggested a color infused shampoo that deposits more red, another, a color protecting shampoo.

Not sure which way to go as the second was an apprentice who was doing a hard sell of products while I was at the salon

Aveda's Madder Root shampoo/conditioner is the best color-depositing red shampoo I've used. I don't really need those now, though, since I'm red using henna and not chemical dye -- I don't have fading problems now. But I still have some of the Madder Root and I like it for special occasions!

I dye my hair red too & while I don't have a specific shampoo recommendation, I suggest washing your hair only once a week. The condition of my hair is better & the colour lasts longer if you don't wash it every other day.

I used John Frieda Radiant Red with the glosser. I also am in support of infrequent washings, I also wash in cold water.

I cannot remember the brand of color-depositing shampoo Sally Beauty sells, but I have used it with mild success. In my experience as a dyed redhead, the color protecting shampoos did nothing but strip the color just like any other shampoo. They might work for other colors, but not red, imho.

Less frequent washing always helped me, and the best thing I ever found was buying a bottle of vegetable-based red dye, like Manic Panic or some other, and adding a dollop of it to my conditioner during the conditioning part of my shower. I added the red veggie dye about 2x a week with great success. Just a minute or two in the shower was enough to refresh the color and keep it 'there' in the strands. I assume the color infused shampoos work in a similar way, but this was cheaper and went farther.

Like the others, I found that the color-protecting shampoos didn't work for red. I used to use the Bumble & Bumble true red shampoo and conditioner, but they're disgustingly expensive and there are certainly less expensive options that work better.

I use at the moment a shampoo from jane carter solution, but my hair is been red for ages so my color won't grow dull really quick, but inbetween

I have dyed my hair red for 20 years and I find some brands are better and longer lasting than others. Garnier is one brand that seems to fade less. BUT a tip for red hair that I was given was that when you re-dye, don't wash the dye out in really hot water. Only use warm or cold water for the first wash as the the smaller color molecules of red dye slip out of hair very quickly. Using cool water closes your hair follicles and seals in moisture and color. I try not to use hot water to wash my hair at any time and it does seem to fade a lot less.
