    No, in the early books he was more troubled about his health, the limitations of his suits, threats to his technology etc.. He was not a smart aleck. That came with later incarnations. I unfortunately think you're in the minority in hating Downey's smug bratness. If he didn't have that persona then his world saving sacrifice at the end would have no basis in change, if you get my drift. Cap tells him he doesn't have the guts to bridge the wire or fall on the hand grenade, but in the end... he does.

    Interesting article suggesting that the major reason for the film's success is that director Whedon handles the story and characters far more like one of his TV shows than the typical heroic film:
