Since you live in the USA, you might wish to look at Gibson and Barnes's M442-A or Navy G-1. I was also impressed with their AN-J-3 jacket when I visited their factory in San Diego a couple of years ago. If you are looking for something without knits, consider G&B's Expedition (Indy) jacket. I would discourage altering anything on any of those jackets in terms of removing knits. If you want a great jacket with a mouton collar, consider Aero's "1950's Half Belt De-luxe" Fur Collar or "Highwayman" with Fur Collar, both shown on their website. It is my understanding that Aero will make a custom jacket, but the production manager at G&B told me that G&B would not because so many people with their rendition of what they thought they wanted turned out not to be the jacket of their dreams. I bought an Expedition jacket in black goatskin with an over sized nickle zipper that someone ordered but didn't like but fit me like a glove and bought it at 50%.

The more I read about silk the less I'm inclined to go for it.

Rayon sounds like more a mixed bag, with some saying it's fine and others saying avoid. Anyone who's got a jacket lined with rayon want to weigh in on how it's worked out for them?

Well..I have this jacket(Vanson Enfield) that has a rayon lining. I do like it. It has a slight silky feel and doesn't cling. It's serving me well and seems durable to me.
