Bow Ties

Estate sale finds from today.

Woah, great finds!! In my approximately 7 years of hunting for bow ties in thrift stores, yard sales and estate sales I believe I have come across exactly 7 bow ties. Guess I'll just keep looking. Surely someone in my area has a box of old ones they'll want to get rid of someday!

Here try this:

Good tutorial on tying a bow tie. He makes the procedure look obvious and simple.

However, he mentions that you can tie it around your leg and then transfer it to your neck. Now, I know that when I tie a bow tie around my neck, there is no room to get it off without untying it. In fact, it can't be loosened without taking it apart. So, all through the video I was thinking, 'How will he transfer the tie from his leg to his neck?' I could see how he would be able to slide it down his leg, but how will he get it over his head? You can't loosen a bow tie without taking it apart.

At the end, it was obvious that he was holding a clip-back tie.

So, what is the point of tying a bow on a clip-back tie when all you have to do is clip it on?

The main point of this is that tying it around his leg was a great way to show how to tie it, but if you're going to wear a real bow tie, one that doesn't fasten in the back, then learn how to tie it around your neck, perhaps after you learn how to tie it on your leg because transferring a tied bow tie will be impossible.

Yesterday at an Independence Day party, we were chatting with my GF's niece, who is a local award-winning designer. My GF suggested she could make some bow ties for me. Of course, I thought this was a good idea! She very nicely agreed! Now...I'm wondering what kind of fabric I should search for? She told me silk is probably going to be hard to find locally and might have to be ordered online. I'm thinking there are other fabrics than silk that would be fine for a bow tie. Any thoughts or suggestions?

First time finding point-end bow ties at any of my favorite budget stores-- "Forsyth" brand at Burlington for $12.99.
I held off to see if more patterns turn up-- they had black and wine red, each with a few colored doo dads on them.

I have a seersucker bow I wear on occasion. It works well with a cotton suit. I believe it is illustrated elsewhere in this thread.
