Bogart Fedora Up for Auction?

It seems that Profiles in History is having another Hollywood memorabilia auction on Dec 12. While flipping through their auction catalog , I saw a photo and description of a Bogart fedora that I thought you guys would be interested in:

17. HUMPHREY BOGART SIGNATURE FEDORA. Vintage, blue-grey fedora made by The Carlson Company (Britain), worn by Bogart in numerous 1940s-era films. Handwritten inside ?¢‚Ǩ?ìH.D.B.?¢‚Ǩ? (Humphrey DeForest Bogart) on the lining in black ink. Inside leather hatband is slightly separated; otherwise, in good condition. From the Jane Withers Lifetime Collection of Hollywood memorabilia. $1,500 ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú $2,500

I wonder if it's really his or not? If someone wants to check it out, they can supposedly preview the items by appointment only the two weeks preceeding the auction.

The fedora as pictured looks old enough to be Bogie's, and the shape, hand bash (which was most common in the 40s) and overwelt brim edge correspond to the hat he wore in "The Big Sleep." And if Jane Withers says it's authentic, well...who can argue with Josephine the Plumber? Keep in mind, though, that actors don't just wear one hat in films. They have several identical ones, just like they have several duplicate costumes (I had a small...okay, tiny...part in the movie "Frances," and Jessica Lange had eleven matching costumes ready for the scene in which she falls in the mud pit -- eight takes, as I recall). The hat might very well have been Bogie's, but it might have been just one of many. Buster Keaton once said he went through as many as twelve porkpies in the course of a single film, and Laurel and Hardy actually had stunt derbies for the messier scenes!

Could anyone actually spend that kind of money on a fedora and not ever wear it? I couldn't.
