The bob.....

So with the new year I'm thinking about a new haircut, or colour, not sure now.... I think aboute bobbing my hair for a while now but never was really sure about it because I would miss to curl and waterwave my hair, but since my hair is only shoulderlenght it wouldn't take long to grow back....

But anyway, my question now is there a difference between the 20's bobs and the bobs of today? I think the 20's bob look's like something you can easily do yourself (if you can do it) and not layered or am I wrong, what do you think?

Beside this all, is it me or was it very unpopular for blonde girls to have their hair bobbed? I think I've never seen a picture of ablonde bob from the 20's (at least non who wore her hair straight).

Hi, I haven't been around here in a while; but I saw this post and couldn't help myself. I recently had my hair bobbed Naama into a chin length cut, no layers (and I have naturally curly hair). Since I have curly hair though, it's so easy to come up with various 20s looks- I just love it! I can still put it in pincurls, pull off finger waves, wear it straight, or naturally curly and it all looks cute! Sometimes it's just fun to go for a new look.

I frequentely have worn my hair in a layered chin length bob since my hair is fine. Alas, no waves or pincurls for me.

I have sported a bob before and I have blonde hair but thick, so I have to have it layered...Check out Renee Zellweger in Chicago, definetly doable!!!

Well, my only attempt so far at pin curls failed miserably!

I haven't had much time to try something else! Any suggestions, I am willing to try anything...

Hello, ladies--I've been reading for awhile, but this bob thread has finally lured me to post! I've got curly blonde hair and have had a bob for going on 15 years now. Sometimes shorter, sometimes longer, but quite versatile for me, and I'm a serious hair idiot, with no styling skills to speak of.

I do mostly '20s and '30s, so it's the obvious choice. On the odd occasions I do '40s, I have a little more difficulty, but do keep enough volume for a sort-of Betty Grable curly-top do.

And in spite of my bob loyalty, it's only hair! Try it, and if it doesn't work, you can always grow it out.

I'm growing out a layered short bob...you can do fingerwaves with it quite nicely if you don't like curliness... The only problem I had with such haircut was that the hair at the nape of the neck was too short to wrap into a curl (when doing pin/roller sets).

You're welcome. I've been trying to find the Daniela Turudich hair books for ages myself! It might be worthwhile hitting your local libraries and looking for Golden Era hairdressing and "beauty guide"-type books actually published in that era; I've had good luck finding those.

So someone else feels my pain.

I was able to borrow the 1940s book and the Vintage Face by Turudich. I had requested the Deco book but I grew impatient and gave up. And yeah, beauty books directly from the source are always interesting.

I was also looking for the Turudich books, but at places where you could get them you'd have to pay a fortune for them, it's insane! Aren't there any other good hair books around?

By the way, I meant that I think I'Ve never seen a blonde girl with a Louise Brooks Bob

I'm currently sporting the Louise bob, but my hair is dyed dark brown. When I had my hair its natural blonde, I never thought of bobbing it, and I don't know why! Plenty of girls did it back then.

Because I can't get my own hands on the Art Deco Hair book, too, I cheat and us Ye Olde Internet... a great site for thousands of '20s-'30s photos of hair is http://www.silentladies.com/Ladies.html The photo of Colleen Moore on the front is jarring, but there are some great photos of bobs and short 'dos if you pour through the pages.

And Paris1925, I agree with you... "if it doesn't work, you can grow it out." I am getting bored with my Louise and I think it'll be obliterated by new growth in a few months.

I think "The Bob" is such an elegant hairstyle and even though it's really short and simple but, it's staright sleek lines makes it so ART DECO and modern no wonder it was the rage of that era (1920s).
