Buying a Tuxedo

Goodday, Ladies and Gentlemen.

I'm in the market for a good suit OR a good tuxedo. I'm leaning more towards a tuxedo right now, but a suit would be great too. However, since i've never owned a proper suit before I thought I would consult the experts.

First, I'm looking for a double breasted type jacket; i love the look of these suits.

Black or navy blue if it is a suit, obviously black if it is a tuxedo.

Here is a picture of a tuxedo I can get for 150 dollars Canadian. It will be used, but I did some modelling for the company so I am getting a deal on it:

Now, if I was going the suit route, how much would I likley pay for a taylor made job? And, given I'm a college kid who would wear it maybe a dozen times a year, is the price difference/comfort difference even something to consider or should i just stick to Moores?

I am by no means an expert on suits or tuxedos, but in my opinion, a suit is much more versatile than a tuxedo. I have only had occasion to wear a tuxedo twice in my life so far, and I'm 24. I would treat buying one like an investment, and I'd want to be sure that I was at a size I would stay at for a good many years so I don't proportion myself up a size and outgrow it. Therefore, I would wait till I was around 30 before buying one, as many men seem to gain quite a bit of breadth between 20 and 30 (especially in the shoulders).

Regardless of this, if you can get a deal on one, it may be worth your while to do so. If you just want a fairly decent suit to wear 12 times per year, check out some of the men's stores near you. If you want something tailored to fit you, you don't mind spending over 1G, and styled like the suits of old, you'll want to talk to MattDeckard and get the contact info for Jorge Avalos

Farnham54, have you considered a vintage suit or tux? You can find vintage ones on e-bay for way cheep! And, they are made SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better then a new one. Plus, they look better I think. If you would like, tell me what size you are and I might be able to help you find one.

I know of some good vintage shops up in Winnipeg and I heard of some in Toronto as well. But, if you want, you can e-mail me and give me your measurements and I can start looking for one.

I swear by vintage! It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s the best you could ever want in a suit or a tux. I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m like you I like double breasted my self and find it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s one of my favorite styles. Navy is so e-z to find in vintage. Double breasted tuxes are e-z to find as well.

Which one is it? That link brought up a number of tuxes (not to mention that catchy music! )

BTW, I'm twice your age and yet to find an occasion where I needed a tux...if you don't count my sister's wedding. I didn't even wear one for my own.

You gents are certainly pushing me towards the Suit market iw as thinking it would be more useful too; a black suit that can be worn basically year round to most functions, be they job interviews or formal dinners.

Canadave: The tux I was looking at was a double brested peak lapel black job which I think looked rather sharp--I thought that link would take you right to it but perhaps a bit of fishing around might be required.

Wildroot: Thanks a lot for the offer, I'm 39 tall (about). If, in your travels you find a double brested suit in about my size, I'd greatly appreciate it if you let me know (assuming, of course, it either won't fit you or you don't want it). Money is tight at the moment, but come summer I should be able to do some serious shopping!

Yes, I think that a suit would be a better investment at the moment. I did see the tux that you mentioned and thought that it was very sharp! It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a very classic look in my opinion. But, a suit would be more versatile then a tux.

A size 39 long eh? You know, I might have just the thing for you!!! I was shopping at a vintage shop last week and found a beautiful double breasted dark navy blue suit! It was in ways too long for me!!! I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m 6?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢3?¢‚Ǩ? and that doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t happen very often at all! But, the suit was to skinny for me. I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m a bout a 44 Long and this suit was a 39 long. Pants were about a 31-32 waist and the inseam was like a 36. Nice cuffed pants and a Hollywood waist with dropped belt loops and pleats! It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s not a solid navy it has a really nice subtle pattern to it. I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll try and describe it for you. Let?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s see now?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ OK it has medium blue stripes, and dark read windowpane. Very rare pattern and it doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t shout gangster! It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s very conservative and would be perfect for fancy occasions or job interviews. The price it was tagged was $85. US. That is way cheep for a vintage suit!

Every one I know that has at least one vintage suit in their closet loves it. So, if it sounds good to you, I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m sure we can make an arrangement. I will be over in that area next week and can look at it and take all the measurements down. Condition wise I would say mint! There are no moth wholes or stains. Very crisp and you would get nothing but complements on it!

Canadave: No (at least, not yet!). I was only in a fashion show where various local vendors displayed their wares. There was a disproportionate number of ladies on the sign up sheet, so I penned my name on and ended up making the cut!

And, I met my girlfriend in the show

However, it was a lot of fun, as we did have to do some publicity stills for the show--I could handle that as a dayjob, sit around in very nice clothes getting my picture taken
