My search foo is not up to snuff this morning.

What can anyone tell me about these coats worn on "The Andy Griffith Show" of the early 1960s?

I like the collar shape and the pairs of buttons.

Were they a standard law-enforcement-supplier offering at the time?

No idea but, they look wool and I like them except for the lack of handwarmer pockets.

My father, a WWII Marine, would never allow my brother and me to put our hands in our jacket pockets. He said it wasn't military.

Why condolences? It's simply an observation that the police uniforms probably took a cue from the military, particularly in that post-war period. There are a couple of Loungers who go without side-pockets for the very reason that they think it looks sloppy.

I think they can ruin the line on a jacket that was never intended to have them - ie an Irvin or J100.

I love those jackets. I wish I wasn't the only 23 year old who watches that amazing show. I haven't found that jacket either. Good luck!

@Sloan: agreed. I make sure to not have hand warmer pockets in my J-100s. Just doesn't look right.

Those jackets look great. A wool "melton" jacket, maybe? I seem to recall L.L. Bean was still offering a product by that name in the '90s, but now there's nothing like that in their catalog or on their website that I can find.

I saw a colorized image that showed they were green. That is probably likely with a sheriff's jacket, but may have been someone's assumption.

I seem to recall L.L. Bean was still offering a product by that name in the '90s, but now there's nothing like that in their catalog or on their website that I can find.

I have a wool Bean jacket that might be from that era. I can see where they may have done something like the sheriff jacket at some point.
